Hi Kenyan or past tramping visitor :).

My web researches say that hotels in Kenya can cost from 10$ to 1000$ per
night.
So, budgeting is not easy. I would arrive in Nairobi, hire a 3-doors suzuki
and spend 2 weeks on tramping trip. Last year I've been to SA and booked
nice guest-houses with no trouble for 10$ calling just few hours prior to
arriwal using contacts from Pascal guide.
What would be real cost of tourist-class hotel or guest-house in Kenya? What
number is closer to real: 20 or 50$? Budget is an important issue.

What would be a price for a car rental? I found Suzuki Sierra 3-door - 4WD
for 75$/day (7+ days rental). Is it good offer or is it better to book a car
just for one day of arrival in Nairobi and negotiate the price directly with
few car rentals? For example in SA car rental for foreigner is cheaper than
for resident.

Prices for Kenya available in Web looks much higher than ones realised in SA
beeing in place. Is it true that Kenya is so much expensive (ie. 5 times
more for guest house)?

A final word. I'm at the last stage of making decision go or not to go to
Kenya in September this year. Flight is priced at $600. That's ok. But live
(accomodation&car) looks expensive when searching Web sites. How does it
look in place in real live?

Regards,
Marek

Dear Marek,

You have had a few comments about the accommodation part of your trip,
but no response about the car.  Yes, cars are far more expensive here
in Kenya than in South Africa.  Also, the roads are in far worse
condition as a whole, and four wheel drive vehicles can take an
extensive beating by clients.

I would actually be leary of a 4x4 for $75.00 a day.  There are either
going to be some hidden costs, or this car is not going to be in very
good shape.

I would also be cautious about hoping to book a car when you get here.
There are a couple of conferences in Kenya in September and we are
getting a lot of bookings.

Have a great trip.

Gary, Marek,

give www.rasuls.com a call or send them an email. I've never
seen them run out of cars. They have many. And their prices are
reasonable in comparison. The prices are on the web site, and
they also have a monthly rate at least for the bigger cars.

Hans-Georg,

As I own and manage the Hertz franchise for Kenya, I should probably
stick with them.  But I do send some overflow to them from time to
time.

Gary,

oh, is that you? Interesting! Before I left Kenya in June I
witnessed the takeover by chatting with some former employees.
Actually caused me a little problem, because I usually
transferred Rasul's car keys from and to the woman who used to
work for the Hertz counter at the airport, but was no longer
there.

Anyway, congratulations! Looks like an interesting deal.
