I know a 21-year-old college student who's looking to minimize her
airfare to South Africa.  Her three possible itineraries are below.
She is flexible on the dates by about three days either way, and she
might leave from Los Angeles or another US city to save money.

1. Jul. 08:  San Francisco to Cape Town
Dec. 20:  Cape Town to San Francisco

2. Jul. 01:  San Francisco to London
Jul. 08:  London to Cape Town
Dec. 20:  Cape Town to San Francisco

3. Jul. 01:  San Francisco to London
Jul. 08:  London to Cape Town
Dec. 20:  Cape Town to London
Dec. 27:  London to San Francisco

How would I find her the lowest fares?

(I'm not asking you to find them, although you may.  Rather, I'd like
to be pointed to the web sites or travel agencies or consolidators that
I might contact.)

I just did a check with the wholesale consolidator I use
and found the seats on British Airways - not the cheapest
possible seats, because that class, 'Q', was not available.

But any good consolidator should sell you the space
for about $2000 total. If you use a credit card, add
another 3%

Free stopover in either direction in London if you want it.

It may be difficult to find a cheap fare since she wants to stay more
than three months, and since some of those dates are in high season.
But $2000 is still way too much - getting a cheap flight to London and
then getting a ticket to South Africa from there would almost certainly
be $1500 or less.  She should try flying into Johannesburg, which
should be cheaper than flying into Cape Town.  Once she's in South
Africa she can go overland to Cape Town or take an inexpensive domestic
flight.

You may be surprised to learn that the cheapest consolidator fare I have
that's
available right now SFO/LHR/SFO for the dates she needs is more than $900.

Why? High season across the Atlantic eastbound.
High season across the Atlantic westbound (December 21)

On British Airways - which has the lowest consolidator fares -
the fare is the same to Johannesburg or to Cape Town.

Overland - about 1,000 miles. Each way.

> Cape Town is situated on the far South Western tip of Africa,
> about 1600 km from Johannesburg.

Domestic flights - Minimum of $150 round trip for the cheapest
advance purchase flights.

My point? For departing on July and returning in late December,
$2000 is not way too much.
