Cape Town was generally expensive for hostels when I was there, I did
spend one night at the Ashanti, didn't find it dirty or any more
expensive than the other I stayed at in CT or what I understood it to
be.

Hi,
When I saw the first room in Ashanti I though that there was a mistake
because after 4 weeks travelling in SA I hadn't seen such a bad
accomodation.
They changed me the room (nr. 54) which was even worst as there was
dirty water leaking from the walls (I shot a photo).
The day after I found another backpaker in the same area (Garden)
which was much cleaner and costed to me about 20% less, within the
average of the other backpackers in SA.
Now the possibilities are 2: or the cleaness and price of Ashanti is a
standard in CT and the second lodge (and every backpacker where I've
been in SA) was uncommon or, as I think more probable, Ashanti is a
dirty and expensive place.
Ciao
