screening at connections. Narita and Singapore come to mind.

I thought the issue was a stopover at HKG, and it sounds like he has
never been there.

Hong Kong had (and sometimes still uses) a temperature scan when there
is a scare like SARS. But you just walk past a detector. You also go
through the standard metal detector and luggage scan when going up to
the departure area.
Could be that they stopped. I know they always did it in Kai Tak (may
peace be with it) and the one time I went through the new airport
they seemed to be doing it for all flights. Like Kai Tak, there were a
few central locations where arriving passengers could pass to the
departure level. It was a few years ago, and SARs was an issue. They
were taking digital temp readings off everyone's forehead with a
remote heat sensor, scaring hell out of the unaware.
