Any idea? We're on flight SQ1 from SFO to Singapore. It says there's a
stop in Hong Kong but there is no plane change. Will we have to go
through customs in Hong Kong, do you think?

No. That is an international hop. If you get off the plane, you will
be in transit in a secured area away from passport control and
customs. That area is considered an international zone.

Thanks much!

No customs or immigration but you will probably have to go through a
security screening before being allowed to enter the airport's
"international zone."

Why? Is this something new for Hong Kong?

I changed planes there a couple of months ago, with no such hassle.

No, it's been in place for a long time. Just not for all flights.

He said "probably", like he had no clue.

Or like he's flown many international flights and has experienced secuirty
screening at connections. Narita and Singapore come to mind.

I thought the issue was a stopover at HKG, and it sounds like he has
never been there.

Hong Kong had (and sometimes still uses) a temperature scan when there
is a scare like SARS. But you just walk past a detector. You also go
through the standard metal detector and luggage scan when going up to
the departure area.

Could be that they stopped. I know they always did it in Kai Tak (may
peace be with it) and the one time I went through the new airport
they seemed to be doing it for all flights. Like Kai Tak, there were a
few central locations where arriving passengers could pass to the
departure level. It was a few years ago, and SARs was an issue. They
were taking digital temp readings off everyone's forehead with a
remote heat sensor, scaring hell out of the unaware.
