none - 19 Mar 2008 18:46 GMT Wednesday, March 19, 2008 Police arrest Hanna's suspected killer
Akkaradej Tunkae, 31, has been charged with the murder of Hanna Backlund.
PHUKET CITY: After a regional manhunt for the killer of Swedish tourist Hanna Charlotta Backlund, 26, whose body was found at Mai Khao Beach on Saturday, police have arrested and charged with murder their prime suspect after he gave himself up in Ranong province early this morning.
Region 8 Police Deputy Commander Maj Gen Tavat Boonfueng led a team to Ranong to bring Akkaradej Tunkae, 31, back to Phuket, arriving at Tah Chat Chai Police Station in a police van at 5:30 am, it was announced at a press conference this morning.
Akkaradej allegedly told police that he had watched Miss Backlund and her friend Emma Stenman at Mai Khao Beach for three days until on Saturday he spotted Miss Backlund sunbathing alone.
He approached Miss Backlund from behind, with a kitchen knife in his right hand taken from his home in Thalang, police said.
He grabbed Miss Backlund by her throat with his left hand and, when she attempted to break free, stabbed her in the neck, stomach and side of her body, police added.
After rushing to his home on his motorcycle, he cleaned the knife and hid it in a closet before he changed his clothes, said police.
On Sunday morning, Akkaradej and his daughter traveled by bus to a relative's home in Chumphon province, police told reporters.
After hearing media reports that police had spoken to locals and were moving in on a prime suspect in the murder, Akkaradej left his daughter in the care of his relative and traveled to a friend's home in Ranong, the police said.
Akkaradej called his wife and father and told them where he was, which the pair then reported to police. Last night at Tah Chat Chai Police Station, Akkaradej's father persuaded him by phone to give himself up, the police said.
With Akkaradej's wife and father present, police took Akkaradej into custody in Baan Tublee, Ranong province, at 1:35 am.
Lt Gen Thanee Thawisri, commander of Royal Thai Police Region 8, said, "The knife has been found and will be sent to Surat Thani for testing. We will have the results of DNA tests soon and will take samples from the suspect's clothes, finger nails and tissue."
Akkaradej said, "I feel bad about everything that has happened. The night after I did it I went back to my home and cried. I feel hurt and sad for [Miss Backlund's] family and also for my family. I accept everything that I did because I feel pity for my own daughter."
The case will be sent to court within one month, said police.
The 100,000-baht reward offered by local businesses for information leading to the arrest will be given to Akkaradej's wife and father, police added.
Christina Palm, acting Swedish consul, told reporters, "I am very happy that the police arrested the suspect so quickly. I would like to thank all the officers involved in this case."

What I don't understand is why this guy killed the Swedish woman. he watched her for three days and then killed her - for what?

Guenter Bellach - 20 Mar 2008 12:45 GMT Exacty !
This is very important to know for future tourists why he killed her, so they know how to comport themselves. A serious omission in the reporting on this affair. I am speculating that they were sunbathing in what they thought was an isolated spot topless (that has been admitted by her friend) may be even less clad?? The guy was watching them all the time and finally was overcome with desire, after all in his mind it was an invitation to come and get it, and when he did she resisted and to silence her he killed her.

According to the guy, he watched them sunbathing for three days. He then decided to rape her.
As he discussed it on TV there was no sense of her doing wrong, at least he didn't say so. Nor any spoken hint that he thought she was leading him on.
Simply that he had watched and then decided to rape her.
The guy is described as a "sea Gypsy" which (to the best of my knowledge) implys that he is not a Moslem, although I must say that I have had little contact with Sea Gypsys

That was his story.

If so he's in a different world to real people and needs to be locked up.

After he killed the girl he ran away, over to the Burmese border. His father later went over and got him and escorted him back to Phuket where he surrendered to the police.
I suspect that he reckons it is better to be in jail then shot dead by the cops. With an open arrest warrant for murder and fleeing to escape arrest its pretty much open season on him. His father said that he went to get him so that he could escort him safely back to Phuket.
He will likely confess and get sentenced to death, which will be reduced to life in prison as he shows remorse for his crime. Pretty standard for this kind of thing. By the way, life in prison means exactly that in Thailand, baring a royal pardon which is unlikely for years, if ever.
Runge11 - 22 Mar 2008 11:29 GMT Lol if the TV news said so, then what can we say ??

It wan't the "TV" that said it. It was the guy that said it, ON TV.
RadioFreeEast - 23 Mar 2008 07:23 GMT I"ve been very interested in this case... First of all , The Bangkok English language papers have proven to be sloppy at best. I've posted much on that in the ThaiVisa.com forum.
http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=175178&st=150
Neither paper could even manage to get the name right and the Nation has a glaring mistake, that she was murdered late at night in at least 3 of its reports. I believe this may be deliberate mis/dis- information. I wrote the editor, no correction has been issued as far as I know.
I was at the re enactment and allowed close proximity. The accused, Mr. Tankae showed little remorse, nor even seemed concerned. A possible explanation was that have been extremely fatigued, or even sedated. The Bangkok post is now stating it's best not to wear revealing costumes on isolated beaches and the police seem to have a chauvinistic view toward Ms. Backlund's choice to sunbathe with nothing covering her upper body on an earlier date ( as is done all over Phuket Island by European tourists.) She was attacked, at about 12 Noon , mid day, high noon. The ides of March. Stalked from behind while dressed (as is legal) in a 2 piece bikini while walking north, at the shore line back to the bungalows. Tankae hid next to a pine tree.
I don't feel that sex was the motivation. I think he wanted to kill. He was a largely built man, as far as Thais go. A big knife would n't have been needed to rape. He needed big knife for another reason.
So women, I would suggest you not feel safe under any circumstances while traveling alone. (And if you're traveling with a man, hell, he might kill you too.) Mr. Tankae's religion was not reported. HIs ethnicity does not seem to be relevent, but is reported as a sea gyspy, most of whom live in the southern portion of the island. I too would like to know if he was raised muslim with all its taboo on masturbation. Could this have Phuket's first terrorist attack?
He cited family stress which is often blamed as for motivation for murder.
