Hi,

After having travelled all over Asia from Holland from 1984 untill 1999 our
kids were born  in 2002 and 2002. This stopped our  backpacking, but now the
travelinfection is hitting us hard again. So we plan to go on the road again
and allthough sout-east asia is still calling because of
malariaprofylaxeconcerns in that part of the world our first destination
will be Turkey.

We will be backpacking again and definitely not looking for an all-inclusive
beachresort. This doen't mean we don't want to hit the beach at all, but
just
very moderately. We plan to be away for five weeks around April 2004.
We are looking for a good itenerary for us and the kids who will be 3,5 and
2 yaers old, with stretches in busses that aren't too long. Would the train
be a god alternative. Any ideas for alternative ways of transport. Tips on
cities to visit or avoid with kids. Tips on childfriendly hotels and hostels
and any other advice on travel with children in Turkey.

For some ideas how we travelled before the kids came:

General advice:

- Change hotels a lot less than you're used to. The ideal 5-week trip
with 2 toddlers would involve one week in each of 5 places. Not only
will this reduce the amount of traveling (important with small kids),
but it will give you a chance to get to know people in each place
(good for any traveler, of course).

- Mobility around town is key. For your 2-year-old, bring a sturdy
stroller (good for old streets) or a backpack. Your other kid will be
more challenging because 3.5 is a bit old for a stroller (though it's
not an insane idea) and yet too young to do much walking.

- Consider renting a car if your budget allows it. It makes it so much
easier to get around with kids, and you can get off the beaten track.
Of course, you don't meet as many people as you do on the bus.

- Have a great time, and take comfort in the thought that your next
trip -- even in a year or two -- will be easier!

Wow, I'd find that a really hectic pace even without any toddlers.

You have a point. Obviously, the longer you stay in one place, the
more you can relax and *start* to feel like a local (a month is better
than a week, a year is still better, etc.), but there's a tradeoff
between that and seeing different parts of a country.

Most travelers spend only a few days per city unless it's a big one;
then maybe they spend a week. Yes, that's a hectic pace, but that's
how most people make the tradeoff. For a first visit to Turkey, if you
had 5 weeks and 2 toddlers, I'd recommend about 5 places. Since the
poster has already been to Turkey, perhaps it would make sense to
visit fewer places.

Thanks Bruce and Paul,

Given our normal pace of travel we knew that we had to slow down. I'm still
not sure wether we should break up our trips betwen cities up in order to
spent less time on the bus (say two hours on the bus max and than find a
place to stay a night etc, or travel six hours and stay three nights).

See you in Turkey!

Hans
