Newark-Guangzhou, best route?

It seems many people fly via LAX and use China Southern.
This seems a good way to go, to avoid changing planes in Hong Kong
using the Newark/Hong Kong/Guangzhou route.

Should we have any concerns using China Southern 777 for the 16 hour
westbound flight?  The return is better, only 13  hours.....

Why would you avoid changing planes in Hong Kong when you can take the
Continental non-stop from Newark to Hong Kong?  Hong Kong is a lot
better airport to change in than LAX.
