I 'm looking for a budget hotel in Singapore not too far from the Lavender
Bus Station, say in Little India or Geylang. I plan to spend no more than
100 S$ per night for a room (we are 2 adults and a 7 years children). Do you
have any recommendation ?

btw, i will appreciate any advice about these hotels :

- Tai Hoe Hotel
- New 7th Storey Hotel
- Cactus Hotel
- The Inn at Temple Street
- Hotels 81

Thanks in advance

I wrote several paragraphs in response including info about rooms and how to
reach the hotel and return to the airport.  But your e-mail address is invalid.
If you (or anyone else) want my reply, please contact me by e-mail.

Is there some reason that you can't post it here for all to see?  I'd like a
look at it myself.  TIA

Many Thanks for your help, Larry
you can email me at irenee320brologo@hotmail.com (throw away the brologo),
but i agree with chilly, it's *much* better to post to the group. I'm
certainly not *The One* looking for an hotel in Singapore and information is
hard to find. I have spent hours with google with good results for
commercial information, i know nearly everything hotel's managers want to be
known on the net about accomodation in the area, and that's all... So if you
have first hand information, sure many people will be glad to read it.

Francois - 04 Mar 2004 23:44 GMT
Why not ?
I know Geylang is the "Red Light District" of Singapore, but i have never
been there before. Is Geylang a dangerous place ?

Seven year old child, red light district, does not compute....

the entire island of singapore is one of the most dangerous place in
the world....last year 45  people died because apartment dwellers
hurled down trash from their windows, including flower pots.

Lots of food, local culture, and so on. Kampung Melayu.

Dangerous? No. Red light district? Yes.

Far from the center of the city? Yes.

Anyway. If one want to have an under or around S$100 hotels, there are
more hotels of that kind that are nearer the city center.

And if the object is to be near one of those food markets,  one might
want to try the ones at the Jurong area.

Of course, I think that the primary intention here is for hotels that
are near the Lavender bus station.

Try searching using this:

Palace Hotel is a very basic and cheap hotel with reasonably large rooms
easily accomodating three persons. I don't have any current prices. It's
close to Lavender Food Centre.

Thanks for your suggestion Tommy.

I stayed in Palace Hotel about 8 years ago and it's certainly one of my
strangest hotel experience in Asia. Hotel itself was a bargain at Singapore
strandards with cheap, spacious, and reasonably clean rooms, but the
caretaker was a crazy old man, leaving the hotel at random times with the
main entrance securely locked. Returning back to the hotel we have found the
door closed several times, OK,  let's have a drink while waiting... But the
best was when we were lock up in the hotel with other guests during the
afternoon. We wait one hour or so, and finally decided to organize an escape
by a window of the lobby, at second floor ! It was a bit acrobatic. When
coming back in the evening, the caretaker was very angry with us because we
left the hotel with an open window.

Well, i'm getting old, i have a children, i think i will try to find a more
conventional accomodation for this time ;)

Cheers
Francois

I am from Singapore, I have just booked for my Sri Lankan friends at the
YMCA, the rooms are S$85 nett, single, S$100double with breakfast. YMCA is
located on orchard road and is next to the MRT station.

Geylang is safe, Singapore is a safe country to walk around. I am not
talking about exceptions.

You may like to look at Mustafa hotel. Mustafa is a 24/7 shopping centre.
You have to be there to see their range of merchandise. I couldnt believe it
myself.

Hotel 81 also runs the Franpani hotels. Hope this helps

I would recommend Hotel 81. They are a new chain of budget hotels, all
over Singapore. They have one in Geylang too but I wouldn't recommend
that. You know for yourself that Geylang is a red light district,
pretty sleazy considering you have a kid with you.

Try the Hotel 81 at Chinatown. It is close to the train station and
pretty accessible to other areas of Singapore.

The Inn at Temple Street is a nice little guesthouse. You would
appreciate the entire set up with the surroundings. It is also in the
Chinatown area. In fact, Chinatown has many other hostels. Try surfing
the net for more info.

We looked at a room in  the Chinatown Hotel 81, thinking it could be a
cheaper option for future visits. It must have been designed for "short
time" visitors only, as there was no room around the bed for suitcases or
other belongings!
