I go to thailand almost every year. I stay in one of the Amari Hotels, there are 4 of them in Bangkok. The one I prefer is the Amari Atrium on New Petchburi road.
Have a look here : http://www.amari.com/ Transport in no problem, just take an official taxi from the airport, when you enter the arrival hall, turn left, there is a counter where you can buy a ticket for a taxi.Have a look here : http://www.into-asia.com/bangkok/taxi/
If I can help anymore, just let me know.
Are you from Taiwan ?
Greetings,
Robert

Plenty of taxis or cars available from the airport 24 hours a day. Arriving late like that you'll still have no problem. And no traffic. All the good hotels won't have a problem if you guarantee for late arrival when you make the reservation.
Taxi will cost around 250 baht ($6). An airport "limo" (Volvo or Toyota) less than $20.
Where is best to stay depends on what you want to do. Suggest consulting a travel guide. Staying by the river is popular with some, but the river is not the cleanest in the world and personally I don't consider a view of a running, open sewer worth the extra price.
scruden@hotmail.com - 16 May 2005 11:34 GMT I agree with Tchiowa The JWM or The Landmark or the Sheraton all in Sukhumvit Rd and close to skytrain stations and the new subway (especially the Sheraton) which will save you a "lot" of time and sweat.
Mmmm I don't know Tchiowa! the river isn't too bad these days and there's no denying that a room with a river view is always interesting. Sandy

Some parts were pretty bad. I haven't been near the river since so things may have gotten a tad better.
No question about the view of the river as compared with the view from the JWM (Ploenchit Center and the highway).
Viviane - 16 May 2005 11:36 GMT Depends on what you plan on doing in Bangkok. The river is interesting and the boats are great fun. You can get a bit of a breeze near the river - not as cooling as air con though. If you want to shop, stay near Siam Sq, World Trade Centre or Sukhumvit. Choose a hotel that is close to the skytrain or subway - that makes getting around easy. Lots of flights arrive at Bkk in the night so transport will not be a problem.

oneofcold@yahoo.com - 16 May 2005 20:03 GMT If your main interest is in Bangkok's historic and cultural sights rather than shopping or "entertainment" then stay in Banglamphu.
oneofcold@yahoo.com - 16 May 2005 20:04 GMT If your main interest is in Bangkok's historic and cultural sights rather than shopping or "entertainment" then you might want to choose a hotel in Banglamphu.
Markku Grönroos - 16 May 2005 20:15 GMT > If your main interest is in Bangkok's historic and cultural sights > rather than shopping or "entertainment" then you might want to choose a > hotel in Banglamphu. Banglamphu is just sort of decent hotels. West of the city (the Sanam Luang neighbourhood, Pahurat, Chinatown, Dusit...) is truly much more interesting for most first timers than the newer parts of the city like the vast Sukhumvit area.

I hear banyan tree & Sukhothai are luxury hotels? JW Marriott is a good busness hotel but not all that great for relaxing. Rooms are failry large though.

John Keiser - 17 May 2005 03:59 GMT A less expensive alternative that I liked a lot is the Bosotel, located near the river on a quite Soi near the ShangriLa. No pool. No spa. No parking. OK breakfast [try the oriental variations]. I paid about $20 for an extremely large room. They have since been remodeled and the prices have gone up but still reasonable at around $30 through wiredestinations.com
I liked this location because it is very, very quite yet only a few minutes walk to the SkyTrain or the river taxis. So you can go to the palace as well as Silom Square or anywhere else with equal ease.
Also, they have a pretty good message staff.

vin736@hotmail.com - 23 May 2005 23:48 GMT We stayed at the Novatel in Siam Square in Dec 04. Really did like the place and it seemed to be in the middle of everything, very convenient and nice. And it is pretty close to the Metro as well.

(Yes, as one addicted to HRC nachos, it matters to me.) :-)

scruden@hotmail.com - 24 May 2005 15:31 GMT The Swiss Park is in Sukhumvit Soi 11 close to the skytrain and subway stations which make it much easier to move around the city than before. That part of town is cosmopolitan and interesting, plenty of good restaurants and Central and Robinson's department stores are close as well.

I used to stay regularly in the Swiss Park Hotel in Sukhumvit soi 11/1. Its quite a good hotel, nice location, and you can get some reasonable rates for it if you shop around.
I don't stay there any more. I accidentally broke a glass in my room (the cheap ones they put in the bathrooms). You can buy a set of four of those in the local supermarket for about 100 Baht, but they insisted on adding about twice that amount to my hotel bill for breaking just the one. I paid it, but told them I'd never stay there again, and since then Asia Hotel has had all my business.

scruden@hotmail.com - 25 May 2005 17:06 GMT Repeat business is not a concept widely understood in LOS Chris. This sort of thing has happened to me too.

Remember that this is the same principle as phone charges, mini-bar charges, etc. *ALL* hotels charge ridiculous rates for these types of things.
Of course most won't charge if you break a glass. But when you're staying at economy hotels they will. Sheraton, Marriott, etc. all charge high enough rates to absorb incidental costs. Lower priced hotels don't.

I can highly recommend the Sheraton hotel on the river, it is named something like Orchid (one of the top rated hotels in Asia in a recent survey). All rooms have views of the river which is nice to watch the busy boat traffic, or take a trip yourself with the boat company next door or the nearby water taxi. On our first visit they upgraded us to a room on the higher floors which we enjoyed more than the one on the lower floors, but both are nice. Just north of the hotel is a large multifloor store building full of antique dealers. It's intersting to visit, even if you don't buy, and their prices are reasonable. I enjoyed this hotel immensely compared to staying in the Sukhumvit area.

scruden@hotmail.com - 24 May 2005 15:35 GMT The Royal Orchid Sheraton ........ excellent hotel.
Great views of the "River of Kings"
