KL and Singapore

I would be travelling between KL and Singapore end of october and was
trying to find the cheapest and the best way to get there. I found MAS
has a flight from KL to Changi for 200US$ and to Johor Bahru for 95US$.

Is it advicable to take the flight from KL to Johor Bahru and then use
some other transportation to reach Singapore or fly directly to Changi.

If flying to Johor Bahru is ok, then what kind of transportation are
available to get into Singapore quickly.

Thanks

AirAsia (www.airasia.com) should have the cheapest flights.
Alternatively you can take a bus (five hours).

This seems strange - I do this flight now and then, and the walk-up fare (if
you show up at the airport 30 minutes before the flight with no reservation)
is about $100. Or do you mean for a return ticket?

If you are flying to JB, you might as well fly AirAsia which is much
cheaper.

But honestly, if you do that I doubt you'd save any time over just taking
the bus the whole way from KL to Singapore. By the time you deal with both
airports and airport transit and the border and everything else, it'll
easily take you the 5 hours that the bus trip would have. Flying KL-Changi
direct, on the other hand, is faster than the bus but not by much, and it's
quite expensive.

There are some extremely comfortable buses (as nice as business class on a
plane) and it costs less than US$10 (you can do it for $6 if you change to
the local Singapore bus in Johor Bahru). The only time I fly is if I am
connecting to an onward flight at Singapore airport. If I am actually going
to visit Singapore itself I always take the bus.

Why not try the express buses? Comfortable, takes 5 hours from downtown KL
to downtown Singapore. See discussion here:

Good grief, take the bus, it is relatively quick, comfortable, air-
conditioned, gets you closer to the centre of Singapore than the plane,
you don't have to walk for miles inside the terminals, is cheaper, plus
you can look out of the window.

I've used Aeroline.

It's pretty good.

S$40/- or US$24/-

I might prefer to take one of the two buses Nice/plusliner or Aeroline.
The website for Nice/plusliner is not working and gives an error that
the site is down.

I looked up the aeroline bus and it looks pretty good.

Which bus 'Aeroline' or 'Nice' is closer to KL international airport. I
will be arriving in KL airport and would like to get the bus from the
terminal itself (if possible).

Thanks for all your help

Unfortunately neither stops at KLIA. What you can do is catch the airport
express train (ERL) form KLIA to KL Sentral (trip takes less than 30min).
From KL Sentral, take the KTM Komuter train to the old KL train station (ask
for direction), just a stop away. Nice's terminal is there.

Not sure why you insist on taking a taxi, when a flight is much faster.

Anyway, the distance between KLIA and Singapore should be around 280 km,
which could cost you 400-500 RM. This is a guess, which takes into
account the fact that the taxi driver has to drive back to KL or KLIA,
once in Singapore.

There's no "orchid road" in Singapore (there's an Orchid Club Road and
an Orchid Drive, although I assume you mean Orchard Road), and why
would you take a taxi on a 3~4 hour trip? It would be cheaper and
faster to fly.

Orchard Road? More than flying.

Almost all of the buses are pretty good. I don't see the point of paying 4
times as much for the Aeroline - basically you get about $2 worth of snacks
for that.

I don't believe that either one serves the airport. You may have to get a
local bus or taxi to Seremban in order to catch a long-distance bus to
Singapore.

Your advice is to spend an extra two hours going into KL and then back down
past the airport again?

Not really, going to the Nice bus terminal (KL old train station) from KLIA
should take less than 1 hour. Anyway, better than getting fleeced by a cab
driver to Seremban (or a slow erratic bus service), and with no guarantee of
a Seremban-Singapore express bus (Seremban to Johor Bahru, yes, but then
crossing the straits is another story). Btw, I think the original poster is
confused himself - insisting on a road trip from KL-SG when flying directly
to SG makes more sense. I think we are wasting our time on him. :-)

Ah, I always take the bus to JB and then switch to the local bus because
it's faster at the border (as a 3rd-country passport holder I can jump the
queue by using the foreigner booths and get on the bus ahead of the one I
arrived with).

I think you could be right here.

Dunno. Was that me?
Anyway, if it was - it was just a thought.
Don't know how much time they had. If they got a bit, they can dwaddle a
bit.

Me? Flying's better - especially considering that it's not like Oz when
you're getting fleeced blind.

If you are looking at the luxury coaches or other coaches, consider your
prefered destination point in Singapore.

NICE pickup is at the old Railway Station, one stop away on KTM Komuter from
KL Sentral, where the KLIA express train stops. Coaches drop you off at
Copthorne Orchid Hotel on Dunearn Road. You'd need to take SBS bus # 105 (or
others) into Orchard Road (10 mins)

Aeroline picks up at near Putra LRT station, many more stations away from KL
Sentral. Coaches drop you off at Grand Copthorne, Havelock Road. Local buses
take you into Chinatown section of the city (5 mins)

First Coach picks up just off Bangsar LRT station, 1 stop away from KL
Sentral. They drop you off at Novena Square & MRT station.

These three luxury coach services have about hourly departures from KL.
Point to point is almost always 5 hours, barring massive accidents on the
highway. Cost RM40 for First Coach (my usual), upwards, one-way.

Most other Express coaches leave from PuduRaya bus station, a hefty 15-20
min walk from Masjid Jamek LRT station. TransNational have multiple
departures into Lavender Street. Most other buses drop you off at Golden
Mile, Beach Road. Cost: about RM 25.

This was what I was worried about. I am travelling from Canada and I
didn't want to get down in the airport, take bus/train/cab to get to a
bus station and then take another bus to goto singapore.
Alternatively Are there cab services in KL international airport
terminal that can take you directly into singapore. If yes how much do
they charge (it need not be exact, just an approx fare).
Do the cab companies who operate between KL airport and Singapore have
websites?

Thanks all for your help so far.

Better catching a direct flight then.

If you're going to Singapore, then I suggest flying direct to Changi.

If you're flying into KL attend to something first, then you can take the
KLIA Experss (http://www.kliaekspres.com/) to KL Sentral.

You can catch the KTM train from KL Sentral to
Singapore.(http://www.ktmb.com.my/).  You get off at Tanjung Pagar station
in Singapore.  Take the MRT (http://www.smrt.com.sg/smrt/index.htm)
downtown.

A taxi from KL to anywhere in Singapore is going to be expensive (t's a 340
km journey).

My guess it that its RM400 from Puduraya Station in KL.

You've probably got more then enough info, but just in case any one's left
this bit out.
You can take a bus across to the border.

I think that's about as cheap and nasty as you can get (except for walking
there).

Otherwise, try something like Jetstar Asia I guess.

I agree that flying might be cheaper if I was going alone. We are a
group of 3 people and I was thinking that taking a cab and sharing it
between 3 will workout cheaper, wouldn't you agree?

you can try flying into bangkok and catching the train to singapore. could
be cheaper still. :-)
