Hi,

I want to head to SE Asia this december. I am looking at resorts on the
beaches with crystal clear waters, some scuba diving and snorkeling.
More natural treasures like islands, caves, forests are a big plus. And
if its not too much to ask then a town/city close-by for some ethnic
shopping. I had been looking at eastern Malaysia but then found that
most of it is closed due to monsoons that start in november end. Can
you make some suggestions?

Thanks,

- Siddhartha

Stick to the Indian Ocean side - sheltered from the NE monsoon.

Go to Ko Phuket (Thailand) and the nearby smaller islands.

Do the Phuket beaches have clear waters? I remember reading that around
Phuket the beaches have muddy waters? So I was thinking of Maldives,
maybe.

The Surin and Similan Islands are reachable from Phuket and are counted
among the top half dozen dive sites in the world.  But instead of drip
feeding us with requests for information, why don't you use a search
engine to find exactly what you do want and then ask the group for their
views on your conclusions.  That way you will get specific information.

Depends on who counts. A few years back a Swedish daily listed 100 best
novelists of all times in the world. About 50 of them were Swedes..... I
know nothing about diving myself but I have heard of many sources that there
are endlessly equally  fine sites in Indonesia alone.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I have narrowed it down to the Gili
Islands near Bali mainland. Can someone give me more tips for a
reasonable and comfortable stay there?

Try Lombok and Bali weather is still good there in december with plenty of
forests and volcanoes to view along with great beaches and friendly locals

well, depending on where you are the raining season in lombok can be
annoying. I'd not do a 5 day trek in the soth-of rinjani area during
raining season. In the beach areas it is quite okay although daily rain
(a couple of minutes up to an hour) happens ....

Bali seems to be better, at least when I was there the last time we had
a lot of rain in lombok but nearly nothing in bali (although raining season)

I don't know why you are asking this, However, FYI, Bali is mainly Hindu

I hope it isn't a crime yet to ask that question

That's perfect.  Keep it like this.

Indonesia is 85% Muslim, but on the island of Bali the predominant
religion is a local version of Hinduism.

Hi Siddhartha

Krabi is one of my favourite beach places and the weather is usually
good during december. Krabi is on the Thai mainland close to Phuket,
koh Phiphi is an island between Phuket and Krabi. Krabi seems to have
many of the things you are looking for such as islands, mangrove
forests and caves.

You can check out some photos I took last year:
