Which way is better, by plane or train? How much do they cost? How long do

Train: 210 minutes to Okayama (by Nozomi), then change to another express,
160 minutes. 19000-20500 yen. (express charge incl.)

Air: 10 flights every day from Haneda Airport. Takes 80 minutes.
27700 yen by regular fare. (you may get discount, though.)

Consider Highway Bus from Shinjuku (as you know, the terminal of N'EX)
or even Osaka area. They would be circa 10000-13000 yen.
