We will be going for 5 months, leaving in February, 2006 and returning to
the East Coast (US) in July 2006. SO far, the fares are in the $1000 range.

Any hints on better prices??

Try one of the Chinese agents in your local Chinatown. And try one of
the lower cost airlines, Korean or EVA for example.
