Avoid that period or avoid Guangzhou. Foshan will be a cheaper, for
example, and it's a reasonable (less than an hour) mini-bus ride away.
I've just shown up at the train station from HK and gotten a fairly
decent business hotel for <$90, within walking distance of the Canton
fair, but of course you might not be so lucky (there may still be some
residual fear of a SARS return helping you). There are a lot of
third-world business people descending on Guangzhou for the big fair
too, so you can't necessarily get better value by going downscale (but
you can get cheaper).
