Help Considering Taiwan

We're flying to Asia, and want to make a short stopover.  The choices
are either one day in Hong Kong, or 2 - 3 days in Taipei.  The last
day will be Christmas Day.

This would be a no-brainer, except that we have spent plenty of time
in Hong Kong, including once at Christmas, which is wonderful in Hong
Kong.  But we don't really need to do it again.

And we haven't seen Taiwan.

We like walking around interesting cities, street markets, food, and
excursions out into scenic countryside.  We don't like night life and
small airplanes.

Recommendations would be welcome.  And we're specifically wondering if
it's possible to take a day tour by land (not air) from Taipei to any
places worth seeing.  Either a bus tour or private guide service is
possible.

I've been recently in Taipei. Here's my travelogue and photo gallery:

In addition to what wrote Jessie, there is also the Longshan temple
(very nice).

Taiwan is a nice place to visit , the people here are quite friendly
..........

My recommendation are :

day 1 :  Chiu Fen -  Yeh Liu - Keelung -  these places are located out of
taipei ( about 1 hour drive away )
day 2 :  Taipei CKS memorial hall, national palace  museum , yan ming shan
( hot spring baths are recommend ), Taipei 101

If you need to book the hotel and transportation arrangement, I can be of
help

Thanks for your reply.

Is Christmas anything special in Taipei?

(We have seen Christmas in Hong Kong, where the skyscrapers are all
lit up, and families and teenagers throng the waterfront promenade in
Tsim Tsa Tsui, Kowloon, to view the lights.)

Thanks,

Walt Bilofsky

We stopped in Taipei for two days on our way to Bangkon and Myanmar,
and were quite glad we did.  Apparently Taiwan doesn't get a lot of
American tourists, but we thought it was very worthwhile.

Taipei is spread out, so we needed to do a bit more work organizing
our day than in a city with a concentrated "old town" or tourist area.
But it was easy to get around using the map that the government Taipei
Tourism Bureau here in San Francisco mailed to us.  It had all the
tourist points of interest marked on it.

For our two day visit, we started with the excellent suggestions that
Jessie gave us on this group (below).  We visited the Sun Yat-Sen
Memorial instead of Chiang Kai-Shek, and also went to Lungshan Temple
and the Jianguo Jade Market.  We enjoyed everything.  Getting around
was a cinch on the MRT, with an occasional reasonably priced taxi.

The second day was a car and driver tour toward the North Coast.  We
particularly enjoyed Jioufen, a mountain town with a long, interesting
shopping street.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel, which is truly a grand, huge old Chinese
hotel with magnificent grounds.  The flavor of the place more than
made up for the slight inconvenience of having to take a shuttle to
the MRT station.  We got a view room, although we found that the
skyline was not Taipei's best feature and could have just as well done
with a view of the hills behind the hotel. or a lower room overlooking
the grounds.

When going from the U.S. to Asia, we like to stop off somewhere and
relax for a few days after the long flight.  Having been to Hong Kong
several times already, and not wanting to go anywhere very cold in
December, we thought Taipei was just right.

Taipei is ok for a couple of days, but not (much) more than that. It's
as you noted, a pretty spread town. You can't really walk from sight A
to sight B - you need to use a taxi or underground.

You should have a look at Seoul. Not touristy, but very, very nice.

I lived there for a while, before the subway/LRT was built. The bus
system is complex, but manageable for a mid/long term visitor if you
get a good bus map.

Always seems a bit cold and gray to me. I like Korea outside of Seoul
a lot better.

Isn't Pjongyang a good deal colder and grayer than Seoul?

I wouldn't know about that, unfortunately. Maybe not all the time:

Wrong season, Chris. You should have gone there in September-October.
