I am contemplating a week long photography stay up on Mount Huangshan.
Staying on the mountain would obviate the need to start my journey from the
bottom each day. The three hotels I have found at the top of the mountain
are the Beihai, Shilin, and Xihai. User reviews of these hotels are mostly
abysmal, even as the hotels seem to rate themselves as 4-Star hotels. I
don't need a 4 or 5 star hotel, but I hope to find something that hasn't got
the paint falling off the walls, bathroom full of mold, dampness, and thin
walls. Any recommendations for a clean inn with or without private bath? I
have a fair amount of photographic equipment that I prefer not to trek up
and down the mountain daily. Thanks in advance.

Those are the only hotels on thye mountain. You don't have a choice.
On TaiShan you have a choice, but not Huangshan.
The hotels are not 4 star. They are 3 to 4 star. Samll.
Bring food and drink.
Porters will carry stuff to hotels. It is a one hour walk from the top
of the goldola to the hotel.
So, on the bottom you have many choices, but on the mountain you
don't.

You don't have a choice. You can stay on the bottom of the mountain
and go up every day. But on the mountain you get those three. They
are all pretty primitive. All supplies need to be hauled up the
mountain. So bring your own canned food and water to supplement what
you can get up there.
