Why not take the old railway from Hanoi to Kunming and a plane or sleeper
bus to Chengdu?

Hi Ronald,

good idea. Do you know if it's possible to take a bike on the train and
bus? Or do you think that could be a problem?

AFAIK it's still operated in the weekends and of course you can bring your
bike along.
People bring all sort of things along on this train.
Check Google for recent experiences a.s.o.

Unfortunately those services have disappeared from the timetable, and in
recent times even when passenger trains were spotted, foreigners were
sometimes denied boarding. If you like the idea of trotting along in
period narrow gauge carriages, then the line from Hanoi to Nanning is
still open (occasional direct services or swap to bus or local train at
the border) and you can get a choice of overnight trains from Nanning to
Chengdu.

The more direct route would be by train to the border at Hekou, and then
by luxury bus from there to Kunming, and by train from Kunming to
Chengdu.

Or, of course, you can fly, with a change of planes in Kunming.

By plane it's Hanoi(HAN) - Kunming(KMG) - Chengdu(CTU), but with
different airlines (Vietnam Airlines + China Eastern Airlines).

For instance:

Vietnam Airlines
VN 908
Noibai (HAN), Hanoi, Viet Nam     11:10

Kunming (KMG), Kunming, China     13:55
    Non-stop / 320     6h10min     N/A     No     Yes
China Eastern Airlines
MU 5849
Kunming (KMG), Kunming, China     17:00

Chengdu (CTU), Chengdu, China     18:20
    Non-stop / 733     N/A     N/A     Yes
