Is it worthwhile to be in Yangon on January 4, Myanmar Independence
Day?

We will have a long layover between planes in Yangon that day and are
wondering if it will be a good idea to try to see what is going on
there, or perhaps even stay over a day.  Does anyone have any
suggestions or experience?

If you not visiting the city any other day then I would definitely
stay a day or two. Not sure if any celebrations are going on or if
they will be happening in the new capital.

For the convenience of any future travelers, here's the answer:

Visiting Yangon on Independence Day (Jan. 4) was not, on balance, a
good idea for us.  There was little traffic so it was easy to get
around.  Scott Market and some other places were closed, which
disappointed us.  However many shops were open.  We were there during
the day, and any celebrations had already taken place at 4:20 am (the
time the astrologers deemed auspicious for the transfer of sovereignty
on Jan. 4, 1948).  There was a concert scheduled for City Hall in the
evening, but we were gone by then.
