Be careful what you say because you could be declared "persona non grata" in
the PI for saying such things. Just ask Claire Daines. If Manila is **** of
the universe, then it would an understatement to say that Amsterdam is the
armpit of Europe, and I'm being kind at that. Your statement Manila is borne
out of ignorance than anything else. You probably don't know anyone in, or
anything about, the city and so you must such statements. A lonely solitary
soul in the heart of Manila without a frienc is sight, can be the most
pitiful creature in the universe.

Actually, I lived in Manila for more than two years. Few if any of my
filipino friends actually liked Manila: it is a place to earn money to
support family in the province, to escape from to enjoy the beautiful
countryside whenever possible ...
I don't understand the comments about Amsterdam. I am English so I
rarely have the opportunity to spend time there, but I must say that
Amsterdam is one of the most beautiful and liveable cities in the world
-- totally opposite to Manila in just about every possible respect.

Just being in Manila makes you feel like persona non grata in any case.
Walking around the garbage, violence and potholes, it was the only city
that made me think ... "You know, Jakarta is actually quite green,
peaceful and sophisticated ... "
Having said that, Intramuros surprised me pleasantly and the Rizal
museum is (or was - I'm going back to 1999) particularly well done.
