OK I'd like to say my flight changed but I think I just put in the wrong
date.

I get in to Ho Chi Minh City at 22:30 7 Jan 2006.

I just got my visa, valid from 8 Jan to 8 Feb. 2006...  Hmmm so I'm off
by an hour and a half (probably an hour).  Should I tell the embassy
before I go and try to get it fixed or just hope for the best at the
airport?

In the worst case you just have to hang around for 90 minutes, right?
Doesn't seem like a big deal. They'll probably let you in right away if
you're nice.

Its possible the worst case could be worse than that. They might not
allow him to check-in for the flight in the first place if his visa
will not be valid on the day of his arrival.

I work for an IATA  travelagency in Amsterdam.
I would strongly advice you to go to the Embassy and have it fixed.
I agree completely with Chris, it is very very  probable you will not be
able to board the plane as you do not have a valid entry visa.

yes, they've started doing that in AMS.  but maybe
it's not the same where the OP [orignal posteer] is?
well, *IF* he gets passed check-in he could make
VN customs an offer they can't refuse :)  they love
yank notes in between passport pages!

VN is awesome.  go asap before it turns into another
Thailand.

As recently as three weeks ago I was allowed to board a plane at AMS
despite not meeting the requirements as stipulated by the check-in
clerk's computer. I have still had a 100% success rate, including many
times when the issue was raised at AMS (where they are more attentive
than most). If you carry a passport from a rich western country, just be
polite, determined, and have a clear explanation, and you will be fine.

I just got off the phone with United Airlines and they said I'm OK.
There are some countries that they don't visa check and Vietnam is one
they don't so I can get on the plane.  VN immigration I can handle.

Thanks one and all.

Don't forget to let us know how it went - the visa, I mean.

Here's the results:

United Airlines at departure time just looked at the visa and asked "Is
this your visa"?  I said "Yes" and that was it.  My little airport
doesn't get many travelers to Viet Nam.

Now the plot thickens...  Having a savvy fiancee helps.  She contacted
the appropriate authorities in Ho Chi Min City and got me a visa for the
correct dates that I could pick up at the airport.  On arrival at HCMC
I'm not quite sure what happened.  I gave the passport with the bad
visa.  He looked at it and said something to me that I didn't understand
but I could tell he didn't like what he saw.  At the same time an more
official looking immigration office passed by and waved his hand
dismissive manner.  At the same time I showed the my officer a copy of
the letter that gave me showed I had a valid visa that could be picked
up at the airport.  The officer simply stamped my passport and sent me
on my way.  I didn't have to pick up the valid visa.  SO...  I'm not
sure if their computer system had me in with a valid visa, or the
officer just didn't want to go through the hassle but I made it in free
and clear.

Perhaps they were lazy?  Or they want you to come back again.
