I am looking to buy a travel book for visiting Japan. Does anyone have
any they would recommend?

I am also looking to get hold of a large map (poster size) of Japan to
help me plan my trip. I am based in the UK.

Thanks for your help, Abi

If you're just visiting Tokyo, get Time Out.  It's the only city guide
that really goes beyond the obvious to really get into a lot of the
unique things and places.

If you're spending 2 weeks or so and visiting at least Tokyo and Kyoto,
get National Geographic.  It is very strong on history and culture.

If you're spending lots of time and going all over Japan, get Lonely
Planet.  It has the most obscure places and off-beaten-track stuff, but
is weak on the major cities.

I agree, and would add that you should check the Web in general (this
group in specific) as well as the local prefecture/city Web pages if
you're heading someplace smaller. Guide books are excellent,
particularly in your pocket while you're in the country, but the Web
has more information than could ever fit in a single book.

We usually buy the Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness range, full colour,
including photos of basic stuff like the banknotes/coins, food etc.

They also include detailed drawings of the major sights.

Well worth a look.
