Not much good shopping in the area if that's what you're looking for.
Mandarin Oriental is closer to the business area. Walking distance from several good shopping areas and restaurants.
Marriott is a better hotel. Mandarin is a bit cheaper but still 4 star.

And his suggestions look OK to me except that I think the Mandarin is a 5*. Maybe you are the one who should get out more? :)

I think you hit it on the head that his attitude is largely due to his love of Asia (particularly Thailand) combined with his inability to go there more than once every 5 years summing up to an anger with anyone who does.
Now, back to the topic. Do you really think that the Mandarin is 5*? I've stayed there maybe a dozen times. It's certainly a nice hotel but it doesn't compare with the Hyatt across the plaza or with the JW. At least not in my experience.

What about a few more stories of your 'exploits' in the GoGo Bars old bean. They are a lot more exciting than your pro GWB rants of late.

True, that's cheap. But for $10-15 more you take a taxi from the airport queue directly to your hotel in Pattaya, don't wait even one minute for a bus, don't go to the bus terminal, don't wait there for another bus, don't ride in a bus to Pattaya, and don't change to a taxi at the bus station. I'm either in my hotel asleep, eating at a nice restaurant, or "misbehaving" at a local go-go while you're still on the bus.
For me that's easily worth the extra $10.

Are there any good > deals around? Will appreciate suggestions. > ps These people have good rates http://www.goindotel.com/ Sometimes the website does not work well, and sometimes the list of deals is not up to date so confirm by email. Or just wait until you get to the airport, few hotels are full, most are probably under 50% full, some far under.
They also run the hotel booking desk in the airport, just by where you collect luggage (international terminal) There are good deals available, and Indotel probably have the better ones (at least they used, I haven't checked lately). You could be paying anything from US$50 to $200+. Usually rates are ++, i.e. add 21% for tax and service to the base rate.
As for hotels: - If you are there for business, where is your office? No point in wasting an hour or two in traffic each day. - Do you need leisure facilities - good pool, tennis, gardens, etc?
That would narrow the range.
Some options which should have OK rates: - Borobudur - great for leisure - 50M pool, indoor and outdoor tennis, squash, gardens, jogging track. But rooms are not the best and location is in the government rather than business area. I have seem rates around $75++. 5* but not the rooms. - Hilton - good location, where Sudirman crosses the toll road to airport, great for sport, but food can be below par for a 5*. Very big grounds, gold driving range next door, but nowhere nearby to walk to. - Mandarin and Le Meridien - smaller 5 stars, both have good service in my experience; in the middle of the business area - Aryaduta - was the Hyatt and I thing still managed by Hyatt lost the name for political reasons, not their fault. Probably the cheapest of the 5*, good service, but so-so pool etc. Govt area. Maybe still 5*, or could be 4 - There is a new Ritz Carlton, good location by the Marriot - I heard they are doing good deals while they are new. Business area, between Kuningan and Sudirman. 5* upper end. - Nikko - 4*? Nicely rebuilt a couple of years back, looks good. Good rates I hear. Very central - Aston - apartment hotel - good location near Sudirman, probably bigger than average rooms. 4*?
Lots of others, depending on what you need, and where. There is not really an obvious centre to Jakarta, or there are several - Old Jakarta & Chinatown, now mostly run down - The Monas/Thamrin area - goverment offices - Thamrin/Sudirman area - modern business centre, most of the multinationals etc - Kuningan, another business area not far from Sudirman - South Jakarta - residential and some industrial estate (some oil companies there)
If there is a centre I would place it at the Hotel Indonesia roundabout, where you find the Grand Hyatt hotel, the Nikko and the Mandarin.
ps - 26 Feb 2006 00:13 GMT Thanks for that detailed reply. I am trying to book at the Park Lane (who also run hotel in HKG). Their website shows promotion where you pay for 2 nights and you get the third night free,,,works out to around usd60 per night. Will check out the Ritz-Carlton too. ps

The downside is that traffic can get pretty bad on that road, especially between there and Sudirman the main business road.
ps - 26 Feb 2006 09:41 GMT Thank you,,,I am not scared of cemeteries but I would rather be closer to shopping centres and business district. I looked at a map showing Jakarta hotels and the Hilton, though in South Jakarta, may be a better shot. I may get benefit of Hilton HHonors as well. Anyway, I see Jakarta hotels good value for money compared to other hotels elsewhere in Asia. Seems an awful lot of 4* and 5* accommodation and perhaps not enough business,,,which keeps a lid on rates. ps

Their [quoted text clipped - 11 lines] > *** Encrypt your Internet usage with a free VPN account from > http://www.SecureIX.com *** RAK - 26 Feb 2006 10:06 GMT For shopping probably the best in Sudirman/Thamrin are: - Grand Hyatt, which has the very upmarket Plaza Indonesia in the same complex, and the more traditional Sarinah department store (which has a floor of Indonesian handicrafts at the top) is about 5 minutes walk away. - The Nikko and the Mandarin are just over the road from the Grand Hyatt, both good and cheaper.
The Blok M area of south Jakarta is also good for shops. It has a more upmarket Sarinah department store called Pasar Raya, plus some other posh stuff, and lots of scruffy street market stuff neaby. Hotel Ambara (spelling?) is just over the road, a pleasant enough 4*. There is also a very nice boutique style Sofitel nearby, a long walk or short drive from the Blok M shops (near Blok M Plaza), also near Koi (one of my favourite restaurants anywhere) and the local pet and flower market.
The Hilton has nothing in walking distance but is roughly halfway between Blok M and the Plaza Indonesia/Sarinah, i.e. maybe 10 min by taxi if you avoid the rush hour. It is also close to Ratu Plaza, home of many computer shops and suspiciously cheap DVDs. But I do not think you will get you HHonors points - the Jakarta Hilton was kicked out of the Hilton group a few years back, I think because they could not pay their dues in the economic crisis. But they refused to take the name down. Check if it is listed on the global Hilton site, if so I guess they kissed and made up. It is, or was, the world's biggest Hilton, about 1100 rooms and 250 apartments. I think the Lagoon tower is nicest, Garden Tower 2nd best, main tower 3rd best, but all are OK.
As you say there is simply too much 5* accomodation here.

Particularly Mandarin. The shopping at Sarinah is somewhat expensive but you can get some good stuff there.
Speaking of which, and probably off topic, a friend of mine was just back in Jakarta last week and told me that the Ratu Plaza 4th floor DVD shopping area is gone. Indonesia finally honoring copyrights???
