Roundtrip ticket to Thailand with return date more than a month out?

I know that the maximum stay for a US tourist is 30 days.  I plan to
stay longer and am wondering if it will be a problem if I buy a
roundtrip ticket with a return date, say, 6 months from the departure
date.
Thanks.

Why not just get a visa?  they're really not expensive.

Thanks for your reply Jim.
I plan on getting a visa, but it will still only be good for 30 days,
correct?  My ticket will be for much longer than that.  That's my
question -- will I be hassled here or in Thailand if I try to get on a
plane with a 6-month ticket and only a 30 day visa? Are there other
visas available that I'm not aware of?
Thanks,
Nelson

No, you can get a visa for longer periods from the Thai consulate in
your country.  the 30 day visa is just for visa on arrival people.  If
you plan on staying longer just get a longer visa - it'll be cheaper
than visa runs to neighbouring countries.

No problem, people with tickets for 6 months are not obliged to stay in
Thailand for 6 months.

Don't underestimate the consequences of overstay. You can get in serious
trouble.

If you get a tourist visa in advance you'll be given 60 days stay on
arrival. You can extend that without leaving Thailand up to a maximum
stay of 90 days, after which you'll have to leave the country. There
isn't really any option available to you which would allow you to stay
longer than that. I believe you can obtain a double-entry tourist visa
which would let you spend 6 months in the country with a side-trip to
a nearby country after the first 3 months.

My last trip to Bangkok
Thailand for 2 weeks,  Shanghai 2 weeks, Thailand for another 3 weeks.
Therefore a roundtrip ticket to Thailand of 7 weeks and no problem of visa
