Hi,

with the euro/dollar exchange rate being what it is... and fuel
surcharges just adding to the misery... are you putting off travel to
europe? or going anyway but minding the budget more (i.e. ** hotels
instead of ****, public transport vs a rented car)

No, the euro/dollar exchange rate has no effect on me.

I've always paid attention to getting value for money, and the
next time will be no different.  It's not difficult to get good
rates on lodging, even in expensive cities like London.  I'll
be spending three weeks in Europe soon, and have no qualms about
where I'm staying or how I'm getting around, and that includes a
mix of public transport and rented cars.

And me.

Pottered about this morning, then took buses via Steinstücken to
Potsdam and from there the nice and scenic bus route 697 via Sacrow to
Kladow by the lakeside, from Kladow to Heerstrasse on the X34, then
S-Bahn home. Research trip, that was - next time I'll spend time in
Sacrow and take a wander to the Heilandskirche which, after
restoration (the church having been in the DDR border zone and
out-of-bounds) now enjoys World Heritage Site status.

I will be at Schiphol tomorrow morning for all of 90 minutes, en-route to a
Country (Switzerland) which doesn't use the Euro and where the train system
is infinitely preferable to using a car.

If you stay in Paris you're better off with no car. If you go out side
Paris to somewhere interesting like Normandy, a car gives you freedom of
movement and is cheaper than public transport if there are at least two
in your party.

That, as always, will depend on where you're going, how far etc. Public
transport can be very cheap.

Try going from Giverny to Rouen, Honfleur, Lisieux, Falaise, Pegasus
bridge, Bayeux, Ste Mère eglise, and Mont St Michel without a car.

Why- was it nice? I wasn't commenting on whatever route you've taken- I
was making a general point about the cost of public transportation.

Public transportation makes plenty of sense if you travel solo, as I
often do.

It also makes plenty of sense if you don't want to drive either! :)

Maybe.  My last trip to Europe (Belgium, last February) involved going
out to places where public transport really wasn't an option, places out
in the countryside and all that.  So I had a nice little rental car that
burned diesel quite efficiently.  Bonus was being able to give a couple
of people a ride - they'd missed the call window for the "Belbus" (bus
that is ordered in advance with a telephone call), meaning that their
opportunity to get to the local train station 5km away had passed, and
that meant no train for at least another hour, and ... so I gave them a
ride to a train station that was not only closer to their destination,
but had much more frequent service.

It has influenced where we consider going.  I tend to avoid the
British Isles right now because the pound is so high against my
dollars.  And we are probably going to Ireland this year for the
first week, and then continuing our vacation back in the US
instead of staying in europe as we normally would do for the
second week.

However, it is also true that the cost of trips is dominated
by about 3 costs.  1) air fare  2) Hotel costs  3) daily food
costs.  The first is relatively out of our control.  The second
two, as you imply, are within ones control to some extent.
So the cost of the euro/GBP is an influence but not a
decisive factor in and of itself.  We did go to europe for
2 weeks this year.  We just chose to do it "differently"
because of the potential costs.

What you pay for a Hotel is a matter of choice. 40€ for a chain like
Etaphotel or a small hotel in a town or a B&B. 190€ for a Chateau room.
350€ for the Royal at Deauville.
Eating out from 6€ for a MacDo, 15€ in a reasonable restaurant to 50€,
75€, 100€  or more. The choice is yours.

We have planned a "once in a lifetime" trip for this Fall. DH was in
Europe as a lad, backpacking with a "knapsack" In case some of you are
not that old, a knapsack is a backpack. That was almost 50 years ago.

I have never been to Europe and have always wanted to go. Since we both
have health issues and advancing age, we decided to go now and do as
much as we can as we probably will never be able to travel back.

When it's one's "bucket list" price isn't an issue.

The barge is like a small cruise ship. Here is the trip

http://www.uniworld.com/cruise.asp?ID=130

Here is a picture of one of their barges

http://www.uniworld.com/cruiseships.asp

All meals, including local wines, are included. There is an on-board
host who conducts the tours in the cities the boat docks in. You can go
with the tour guide or on your own. We can travel from place to place
without having to pack and unpack as our "hotel" room comes along with us.

Uniworld is a good outfit, have gone on two of their tours.
Siberia, Central Asia and Russia, and small ship cruise to the Canary
Islands.

Oh, that ought to be great fun!    My problem with the longer ones is
that they cover too much territory I already know well and can revisit
without a tour guide.  I could BE a tour guide for the Rhein in Germany
