What happens of you put gas in a diesel

A truck stop just north of where I live had gas put dumped into their diesel
tank.  The tanker drive, they believe, did it intentionally.  Anyway, the
truck stop pumped the gas as diesel for the better part of a day and only
one person came back and told them that he got gas instead of diesel.  My
question is, what happens if you try to run gas through your diesel engine?
Will it just not run?  Will it ruin it?  Anybody know what would happen?  I
had to gasp since I've filled up at that same truck stop....!

thanks

It *may* run; it *may* not.  The end result depends upon the mixture.

Will it ruin it?

Again, it may or may not; depending upon the mixture.

Anybody know what would happen?

Our shop foreman says that it could, depending on the mixture once
again, cause the engine to explode.  Not a good thing.  Our foreman also
said that a 50/50 mixture could be *highly* volatile (read explosive).

10% or 15% mixture not  a big problem.  You would loose a little power
and make some white smoke.

Much more than that, engine will stop.   It will NOT be harmed!  The
fuel system {And filters} will have to be purged.  Similar problem
with putting diesel in  a gas engine.

Trivia:  I fuel my diesel Benz with Kerosene once.  I called M/B, they
told me to drive it and expect a 10% milage penalty.

Hi,
Not a very good idea and it will ruin a diesel engine if the mixture
is high enough for sure.  The gasoline will lower the cetane number
and make the mixture harder to ignite.  The temps in the cylinders
would be higher when it did ignite, leading to failure of the nozzles.
Also lowers the lubricating properties of the diesel, this could lead
to injector pump failure, which is not a cheap item to replace.  Will
this happen immediately?  Probably not, depends upon the ratio of gas
to diesel.

There is a write up about mixing diesel and gas on the Dodge Diesel
web site, listed first below.  The other sites also contain more
information about mixing diesel and gasoline.

http://www.turbodieselregister.com/mixing_gasoline_and_diesel.htm
http://www.dieselpage.com/art0100gd.htm

I wouldn't buy diesel fuel there for awhile if they got the two mixed
in their diesel tanks.

Hope this helps.  Take care and Happy Campin...

Depending on the mixture in your tank, you could very well have to bring out
the "BIG" checkbook.  Gasoline ain't nothing like kerosene.  Make sure the
station refills your checking account.

Diesel has a lubricating property that gasoline does not have. Too much
dilution can cause premature ring wear.

The Mitsubushi diesel in my old dodge truck could handle up to 25% gas
without damage. The PSD's we have at work get gas by accident about twice a
year. When that happens the engine starts running rough and quits. I have
noticed that the fuel injector pumps eventually have problems earlier then
they should.
