Bob Giddings - 19 Jul 2008 03:59 GMT Sort of half by accident today I found myself looking at a 1995 Jayco Eagle 283 LB Class C.
There's not many times I use the term immaculate, but considering the age this would be one of them. I drove it, and for a change actually enjoyed the drive. It only has 20K miles on it.
Anybody have any luck, good or bad, with Jayco products?
Bob

I've talked with people who have them and they like them... alot.

Came in on a trade-in, hardly used and well kept. 20K miles. It is quite a bit larger than what I was looking for, but it grew on me after I drove it. It was pretty quiet, and handled better than most. They were asking $17K, which is about $3K higher than I'd like. It had electric levelers and a backup video system.
I drove on down the road and checked out a 2002 Gulfstream Yellowstone 22 footer, from a private sale, then came back to look at the Jayco again. Right at closing time, when I checked into the office, the sales manager informed me somebody had just called and put a deposit down on it.
Just as well. I can't make up my mind that quick on anything. But I told him if the deal fell through to call me and I'd consider it.
Bob, who is sort of looking for a 24 footer, and would rather have more pricing power.

There have been a few exceptions that have been decently built, but they are the minority. The quality control at their plant is non-existent.

One test I use is just to drive it and listen. I don't mean for dishes and the like. The Gulfstream, though practically new, was creaking and popping and groaning in all it's joints and walls and cabinets just going down the road.
The two Tiogas I tried were not much better. The '87 Born Free was not so bad despite it's age.
The Jayco, 7 years older than the Gulfstream, was quiet, except for wind noise. Not much different than driving a fairly new heavy truck.
Bob, who can't abide rattles.

Friends of ours just sold their Jayco fiver for a surprising amount.
The company puts a little more intelligence into their design than a lot of others do. YMMV

Unfortunately it was ancient, an '87, and lots of things were breaking on it simply due to age. But I really liked their use of space. Had it been 10 years younger I'd have gotten it.
However, it's a real fixer-upper, and I'm not in the mood.

Steve Richards - 19 Jul 2008 04:57 GMT Just looked at a Jayco 5er last month. The salesman went into the speel- after comparing it to the others on the lot, the qaulity seemed much better. When I sell my 36' HR Endeavor (please Lord, soon!), we'll more than likely end up with a Jayco 5th wheel...

It's not a MH, but I have been a Jayco owner since '99 and have been very pleased. I am President of our local Jayco club and not a single member has ever had a major or for that matter any kind of minor problem of substance with their Jayco's.

I owned a Jayco 12' pop-up for nearly 10 years and can't think of a single problem we had with it. I bought it nearly new from a woman who used it for a single trip home to Ontario from Florida. When I subsequently bought the ZII Zeppelin, I traded the Jayco in for only $500 less than I originally paid - it was still in immaculate condition. When I went back to pick up the new TT three days later, the pop-up had already been sold.

All I'm suggesting is if their lower priced entries are very good quality, they likely put the same care and quality into their Motor Homes and Fivers... hopefully someone out there that owns one will chip in and confirm or refute that supposition.
