We were on the last leg of our 3+ month summer trip.  I was at the
controls.  Less than 10 miles from home.  Driving on AZ-77 heading
southwest of Oracle, Arizona, a little before noon on a 2 lane stretch
of good highway.  Going 60mph pulling our 5th wheel in a 55 zone.  The
highway had a 55 limit for the last 15 miles.  I'm being followed by an
older gasser class A MH and a passenger car.  Traffic coming the other
way wasn't heavy but was frequent enough to prevent passing.  The
highway widens to a 4 lane in about 2 miles.  I'm checking my left
outside mirror fairly frequently as that gasser keeps coming up behind
me and then backs off, like it's trying to pass.

Foolish me...   I should have been checking my right side mirror.  The
passenger car decides to pass both of us on the right, by driving on the
shoulder.  It happened so fast and unexpected that I forgot to get the
car's license plate number.  About 30 seconds later the MH passes just
as the 4 lane comes into view.  I caught up to both of them a couple of
miles later at the traffic signal where I was turning anyway.

rvfulltime,
There's not much you can do when someone passes you on the shoulder of
the road. Just get a firm grip on the steering wheel and pray he
doesn't slide into you. You will never figure out why people do such
stupid stunts.

Oh there's a whole lot you can do if you see them coming.  You move into
their path.

If you would move your truck and 5th wheel onto the shoulder of the road,
into the path of a passing car,   just to keep from being passed on the
right, you are a bigger idiot than the person trying to pass.

Should be checking both mirrors every 30 to 45 seconds at all times.

You can check all the mirrors all the
time and not catch problems like I
had on I-65 northbound into I-80 west,
which is under construction.  You
know "expect long delay" posted
everywhere.  When I was about a mile from
the interchange, it was backed up ....
we just waited it out.  Actually, it
didn't take all that long.  We had the
MH and a toad.  When we were
about 1/4 mile from the interchange, a
semi, whose driver obviously wasn't
going to wait the few minutes it took to
get to this point, decided to PUSH
his way in.  He started moving into my
lane with his front end about 10'
behind my front end .... and just
pushed.  Luckily, there was a shoulder,
of sorts, that I jumped into.  I finally
got in behind him and noticed a number
for the trucking company.  I told my
wife, "call them and report him."  She
did, I don't really think they cared.
But it felt good to call.
