The metal plate with the VIN and Gross Vehicle Weight is missing on
the MH I just bought. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check with the chassis mfgr.  There might be something stamped on the frame.

Are you sure it isn't printed on the title and/or registration?

Also missing is any information about the vehicle itself:  brand,
size, year for a start.  Is there a VIN on the paperwork?  If not, you
might have a stolen unit.

Call the cops, tell them you've just been sold a stolen vehicle.

1) The vehicle may have been stolen

2) The vehicle may be a reconstructed insurance total loss

either way ou should NEVER buy a vehicle without a VIN

Hi,
That's not good.   The VIN number plate is never suppose to be
removed from the vehicle.  On mine the number is in a couple of
locations, on the dash, on a plate along side the drivers seat, and on
a sticker on the radiator (diesel pusher).   If you have the title, I
hope, it should have the VIN number on it.  At least they do here in
PA.

Hope this helps.  Take care and Happy Campin...

Thanks for all your help.  You're right, I'll probabaly find the GVW on
the "real" title being mailed to me by DMV.  I'll call Chevy also. I
purchased this MH at an auction, so I know I'm really taking my chances
to start with. The auctioneer puts a sticker in every vehicle window
with the auction lot # and VIN # on it.  I ran a carfax report and felt
comortable with the licensing reports which matched to a Florida RV
sticker and a Montana campground sticker that were in the back window
of the motorhome. When completing the paperwork after the auction, I
was able to sneak a peek at the actual title and get the owner's name
and address.  A relative of the deceased owner told me that it was part
of an estate and was able to give me a little history and info. So far,
(knock, knock) only a couple of very minor things needed fixed. Still
shakin' her down. Before buying one, I spent at least a hundred hours
in this group trying to educate myself about motorhomes and what to
look for. Many thanks to everyone for taking the time to post here.

Still no luck.  It's not listed on the title or registration.  No help
from 7 different Chevy dealers that I called.  One told me to go to the
library and look it up!  Another told me to just weigh the rig!  I had
to explain the importance of a GVW rating to him. All except for one
told me it was too old (1985) to run the VIN # to check.  The one who
did run the VIN told me it was between 12000 and 14000 pounds.  Sounded
like he was guessing.  Winnebago told me to call Chevy.  Can someone
give me some general idea?  I know that's not ideal, but I'd have more
than I have now.

Also, Is there a separate weight rating for front and rear? Thanks for
any help you can offer.

We had a '88 and we got all the info by calling Chevy.  There used to be an
800 go chevy or chevytrk or something like that.  Anyway, hope this helps.
They will be able to give you not only the GVW, but the combnined and tow
rating too.  BTW, good luck with your transmission, and everything else on
it.  Owned one, won't ever own another!

The guy that said 12k-14k might be right.  I have a Chev chassis maunal
dtd about 1988
and I'm  sure I  saw  in the vin code table what the weight ranges
were.  Unfortuenly, manual is in MH in storage. I'll try to get by there
in next few days and look it up.
