Skookum - 27 Jun 2008 14:42 GMT I have been away from rec.travel.usa-canada for a while and see now that it has gotten worse in terms of jackasses peddling their junk and stupid irrelevant opinions. Too bad. it used to informative and fun to be part of the various threads.
Are there any moderated travel newsgroups that those who really do want to talk travel.usa-canada have now migrated to, where twits selling sneakers etc. can't even get in the virtual door with their crap?

Moderated Google Group - "Business Travel" Great bunch of people, no BS. Very small group, but informative.

I use Outlook Express as my newsreader and have "Message Rules" that delete messages with "fill in the blank" in the title or in the body of the message etc ( you can tweak it). If you too use a newsreader ( as opposed to web-based), then create the rule ( check the boxes) to: " Delete ALL messages" with the word "CRAP" in the title. If/when a new word ( or sender) becomes popular in the spam ( say today it's SNEAKER), then add it (sneaker) to the rule . Personally I can't imagine that ANYONE ever clicks to read the message about " NIKE,JORDAN,SNEAKER, CHEAP". BUT as long as they can post , they will. When I FIRST set it up, I spent about 10 minutes entering 'words to delete'. When you first open a newsgroup those will be obvious, and then I update if I get a new series of titles ( like NIK-E JORD an etc). In this example you could enter jor* to your rule to purge them all. I only see that crap on my screen once a month or so. and then I just highlight them and hit delete key. If they become more prevalent I add a word or two to my filter. I have a rule for "Words in Title" and another for "From" etc. If you haven't used it, do a search for spam , rules , OE as newsreader - setup etc

A quick way using OE is as follows:
1. Select "Properties" from the "File" drop down menu of the post.
2. Click on the "Details" tab. That will yield the internet headers.
3. Using click and drag, copy all the internet headers.
4. Going back to the post, click the "Forward" icon.
5. Above the original post ("----- Original Message ----- ") paste those internet headers.
6. Locate in the pasted internet headers the "Complaints To:" internet address.
7. Copy and paste that internet address in the "To:" line of the forwarded post.
8. Click the "Send" icon to send to this header information.
Looks long and involved, but doesn't take but a few seconds once you get into the flow of things.

"jor" could also be Jordan. Maybe you might have a reason to visit that country. If so, the "jor" filter would prevent you from seeing any Jordan travel threads.

You are aware it is possible to subscribe to more then one newsgroup at once, right?

Not necessarily true. Many people participate in a large number of groups.

I belong to Business Travel in the Google Groups. It's a great group, but not much traffic. RTA and RT-usa-canada still have some good posts. It's all how the individual feels.

Three or four killfile entries seem to have cleaned up this group nicely.

I presumed that I was not the only former frequent user who did this and also that some long term users might still be visiting but who have found other places to look as well. The "existence proof" of such people has already been demonstrated by this thread.

I might also recommend - if you start to use Outlook Express/some newsreader that you connect to group, download ( all , a certain number of messages - mine is set to 500) and if 'that's enough messages' then highlight group and CATCH UP. That means as of now there are NO NEW messages. Next day / week when you login you only see NEW messages AND with your filters setup ( in my last message) you might only see 10 new messages not the 100 junk emails too.

I look in here on occasion. But if I have specific questions, I also look at Fodors' US Forum. Likewise the forums at www.tripadvisor.com seem quite busy.

Why not just use your news readers filter function to get rid of the spam. Use key words like shoes, watches, replica and, best of all, filter any sender containing gmail.

I've noticed the same user ID posting spam under different domains. By filtering a common domain don't you sort of throw the baby out with the bath water? Since very little from Taiwan is legit. I find using partial domains like "contains com.tw" to eliminate all posts from Taiwan. The exception to this rule might be scientific news groups where many Taiwanese, Japanese, South Korean, Indian and Bengali contribute articles those with scientific wish to read.

Where the Subject line contains:
immigrant illegal Britney baby bumps drinks laws ie7 santos currency america paypal amex acer bush gateway vaio aopen clinton hillary pedro evil mexican limbaugh schill racism hawaii Princess voyager Edmonton Pahrump france paris apartment malta croatia iraq cash poland shoot ukrain troll muslim arab toshiba fascist police israel terr draconian japan avertec disease french gay Xbox .... ...
Mark as read ( or DELETE etc) and add a new word as time goes by. I never even see those !
Or choose FROM field - up to you.
Just click your rule and MODIFY to add 'that word'.
Often times you'll see 25 messages that have BUSH or 'Boycott France' or 'so and so has a baby bump' - like I care - so add to your " delete it " group . If already download - then with rules displayed, choose your group and click APPLY NOW and it will scan all messages for those words/senders ( words can be in TITLE or in BODY of message - you choose.
Play with it a bit. Once you get the idea - it's easy to add/modify.

Many more than I seem to need, tho' I have a lot in common :-) I would expect that the more words in your list the longer the news will take to appear. I wonder if this question has been asked in the Outlook Express news groups?

I wonder if this question has been asked in the Outlook Express > news groups? I have similar settings - NO noticeable time lag. The entire file on my pc from any given group might be 1mb - 3mb. Note on MY PC, Outlook express is set to only download HEADERS in plain text, THEN if I OPEN that note, it fetches the rest of the article, so as it downloads the header (title) it just deletes it if a match. ( and I probably have 300-400 'words to match'.)
I think most people set it that way . click on "newsgroup provider name" and click 'settings' - or tools - accounts - settings. Choose HEADERS .

Subscribe to a real news service provider.
Start using a real newsreader.
And did I say stop using googlegroups?

There's a lot of 'em out there, but the one I've been using for a long time is Xnews, and so far I haven't felt a need to find another one. Unfortunately, development on it has stopped, so what you see is what you get. The documentation is pretty lame too.
It's free.
Download and install the "release" version, then download and install the "TEST" version on top of it. It's no more a "test" version than is the "release" version. There's no real installation; simply copy the files to a convenient directory.
There'a a lot of traffic (a LOT of traffic) about Xnews in news.software.readers. Any questions you might have about it have probably been asked and answered there a dozen times.
