I'm going to be in central Pennsylvania and want to see some virgin forest
there abouts.  Please let me know of any last remnants of such in this area
(around State College) it would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

There's a lot of forest in Pennsylvania, but not much of it's virgin
forest. Pennsylvania was very heavily logged in the late 19th century.
Over the course of the last century, a lot of forest has returned to
near its orginal condition.

There are some patches of virgin forest in the Allegheny National
Forest, in the northeast corner of the state. I saw some, and really
it didn't look different from any other old-growth forest. The
Allegheny National Forest should have a web site which might tell you
where to find the virgin parts.

I don't know if there is any virgin forest closer to State College.

The Alan Seeger Natural Area in Rothrock State Forest has a grove of
ancient hemlock trees.  Getting there may be a problem if you go
before the snow melts.  I don't know if there is any snow removal on
the dirt roads that lead to the place.

Cook Forrest near Clarion, PA off Interstate 80 has, I think, the largest
stand of virgin timber. Check out the web site for the Cook Forrest State
Park. There are many lodges in the rea you can stay.
