What happened to Eastern Airlines???

The wife and I want to go down to Disney World in December.  Took the kids
many times when they were growing up and had a lot of good times.  We always
flew Eastern, the official airline of WDW.  Now that we retired the wife and
I want to go see Mickey by ourselves.  We want to fly the L-1011
Whisperliner because we know that is the quietest plane in the sky.  It can
fly automatically without the need for pilots, it takes off and lands by
itself.  They even got those little closets to hang up your jacket between
the seats.  I was looking in the phone book for the number to the Eastern
airlines reservations to book our tickets but had a hard time getting
through.  One place I called I got a Cuban who couldn't speak English.  When
I told him I wanted to book tickets to Orlando on Eastern he started yelling
something about "El Grandote" and Celia Cruz.  Does anyone know what that is
all about?

Anyone know the number to Eastern reservations???

On what planet have you been living for the last 15 years?
That airline disappeared into the ether (shut down) in 1991.

But the Pan Am logo has been revived by Boston-Maine
Airways.  See... http://www.flypanam.com/  =R=

Eastern Airlines was bought by Pan Am. Pan Am was bought by TWA. TWA was
absorbed by a giant black hole and has not been since since. They're all
gone now, sucked into vaccum, with all their assets transformed into
energy and beamed to a distant galaxy in a different dimension.

(It is believed it is the same dimension from which gremlins came to
bite/gnaw into the wing of a 707, a story well documented in a TV
documetary called "The Twilight Zone". In fact, it was documented twice,
once with Captain James T Kirk who appeared on that plane after
transiting through a time warp continuum which pulled him from the
Enterprise to that aircraft).

With one exception.

The name of the Frequent Flyer Program used by Eastern, OnePass,
survived the Black Hole and had been adopted by CO.

This link seems to point to the Eastern/CO heritage in OnePass:
http://www.corporatecampaign.org/twaeast.htm

*>  TWU Local 553 vs. Eastern Airlines/    Frank Lorenzo: 1989

I used to be an Eastern FF member.  The present CO OnePass FF
Program did not start until 1999 (I've been a Platinum member
ever since), and my CURRENT Platinum Elite card has "83" for
"member since".

Thus, it's impossible for me to be a OnePass member in CO's
FF Program BEFORE that Program began.  :-)

I remember Eastern Airlines well, especially the 10,000 share
of its stocks I owned shortly before it went belly up.  :-)
I've owned NO airline stocks, in any airline, since, which
was a Good Thing <tm>.   :-)

I don't think Eastern suffered as dramatic a fall in its final
days as Delta (went from its 43 year low of $2 a share a month
ago, to what it's trading now:  $0.79).

The name of the original Eastern program, started in 1981, was simply
Frequent Traveler Bonus Program.  One Pass came later.  I still have
the FTBP coupon booklet from when I joined in 1981.  Back then you had
to tear off one coupon for each flight and fill in your flight
information and turn it in when you checked in for your flight, as
there was no web booking or online check-in back then. :)

You could use your miles for awards on Eastern, Hertz, General,
Marriott, British Caledonian, SAS, and TWA.  Many people blew their
miles on TWA's flight from New York to Bombay with stops in Paris and
Cairo.  Having had friends who did it and reported on the miserable
conditions of the passenger cabin, especially the toilets, by the time
they got to Cairo, I decided to blow my miles on several trips to
London on British Caledonian instead.  Much nicer, cleaner planes.
And the Caledonian girls were much more pleasant than TWA's surly
matrons.

Thanks for filling in the incredibly detailed info!

I wasn't really a "Frequent Flyer" in any sense of the word, but
I do remember the One Pass originated there.

"online check-in"?   LOL!

The internet "web" thing had such an EXPLOSIVE growth (bigger than
teh Big Bang <g>) that today there's hardly ANYTHING you couldn't
do on-line or find out the info about from internet searches.

It all happened from about virtually <pun intended> ZERO to MUCHO
in a couple of years, in the late 1990s.

I've been actively on the "online" scene since I co-authored
two entire BOOKS (with my co-author in Chicago while I was
800 miles away).    :-)

The books have long been obsolete, because one was a Computer
Manual for a system I wrote, and the system was purchased by
SPSS, and shelved (so that it would not compute against the
on-line system SPSS was beginning to develop), in the late
1970s.  :-)   The other was a textbook on Statistics, using
that system, that had been used by many major universities.
So, they were obsolete by the EARLY 1980s. I was surprised (via
web browsing) to find that they ARE still on sale, in Amazon.com,
with individual full-page ad for each.

McGraw Hill (1980)  ISBN 007037905X  was "available from $24.99".
McGraw Hill (1982)  ISBN 0070379068  was "available from $105.79"

Take it from the co-author.  They are "worth" about the price
of one share of Delta (DAL) which I got on-line a minute ago,
selling at $0.78.  :)

On-line information and computing have gone a LONG WAY!

When I was a teenager in Miami, in the 1950s, I knew quite a few pilots at

fly with Eddy!"

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

Looks like you got fooled by one of the "virtual
airlines" for Flight Simulator. A lot of the Virtual
Airlines have such real looking Websites that a
lot of people contact them thinking they are
a real world airline.
Eastern is only a virtual airline in the Flight
Simulator world. It has ONLY existed as a
VA in flight simulator. A lot of people do
get fooled. Several virtual airlines, including
Polar Air, Trans International (formerly Jetstar
VA), and several others are often contacted by
people thinking they are a real world airline,
trying to purchase tickets.

Well, since I don't rely on a video game as the end-all truth, there is
indeed and Polar Air Cargo that has a fairly large fleet.  I've seen them
many times at airports throughout Asia.

Here's a photo of one of the "real" Polar Air Cargo planes

http://www.airlinerphotos.de/PolarAirCargo_B747-46NF_SCD__N451PA_1259_5046.jpg

Their web site can be found at:

http://www.polaraircargo.com/

As I said, I don't own the video game that you are talking about, so I can't
say if this is the same Polar Air or not.
JRDelirio (Jose Diaz) - 21 Sep 2005 01:07 GMT
OK, so Sweeney's schtick is claiming to seek to book passage in long-defunct
(or long-since-merged) airlines, and Newman's schtick is to claim these
never existed and are only virtual fictions.

Can't wait for the exact repeat of the game for Branniff, Republic,
Piedmont, Laker, PSA, TransCaribbean, CP, British Caledonian, Trump Shuttle,
SouthEast, etc.

You are just  a TAD late. Eastern airlines went out of Business over a
decade ago.  Eastern is gone and Celia Cruz is DEAD too.

Eastern Airlines is run by a bastard named Frank Lorenzo, Bert.

Celia Cruz is the former president of Cuba.  Her husband, Pedro Knight, was
a former African slave.  He used to run Eastern Airlines before the
revolution.  His nickname was El Grandote, which means The Really Big One.
It was a reference to the size of his manhood.  You know what say about
African Americans.

When the revolution started Celia and Pedro got all Eastern planes they
could out of Havana.  They say Celia was a great pilot, and the US used her
several times to try to bring down the Castro government.  She flew many
missions across the Florida Straight, flying low to avoid the radar, to
smuggle arms into Cuba.

President Reagan honored them with the Presidential Medal of Freedom back in
the 80's.

They live in Key West and are still flying missions to Cuba.

Celia Cruz used to do TV commercials for Eastern way back when.  There
was a whole salsa band playing in first class with Celia singing.

Too bad she was never on any of my flights.

You must have a lot of time on your hands to write something so
agitating and not to mention racially offensive.

"agitating"?  You think his post was "agitating"???

ROFL....this must be your first day on usenet.

And if you find it "racially offensive", you must really be overdosing
on the political correctness pills.  I suggest you stop taking them at
once and give yourself a warm soap enema instead.  If that still
doesn't alleviate your acute anal retention, schedule yourself for
seven colonic treatments.

I agree, the OP was simply stating what happened... I don't see how he/she
could wash it down to be more PC without being ludicrous...

...but considering this is being cross-posted to many groups, including
soc.culture.cuba... that might seem offensive.

Not at all. It is now called Eastern Airways and, instead of flying
TriStars, it uses Saab200 and JS32 and JS41 which make a noise like a bagful
of hammers. For details of the romantic destinations to which
you may fly, go to

The rise 'n fall of Eastern.

It started as a crop dusting business on the Louisiana--Mississippi
alluvial plane.

Captain Orville Eddie Redenbacher financed the venture by
promiscuously/proliferately distributing bags of popcorn instead of
pretzels & peanuts.

David Rockefeller supplied the hugemoungous sodium 'n fake butter
loan--the state of the art & envy of the corny industry.

One day some stewardi (plural of attendant) got pissed about the lack
of eligible animal husbandy, and walked over  to the Southern-Braniff-
Capital-National personnel office.

Plus the luggage tossers forgot to leave the baggage out to rot in a
terrible rainstorm, and the corn company was sued in a de-classe action
by Samsonite.

The end came when slanderous DON'T EAT ON EASTERN signs were erected by
the Dobbs Toddle House Sky Chef Corporation circa 1954.

Don't know anything about the airline itself (not in my region of the
globe, never heard of it before).

But, the animated route map on the opening page above is *really* nice
-- would be great if other airlines were to steal the idea.

Eastern Airlines was brought down by one of its own employees.  His
name was Frank Lorenzo, a gay flight attendant.  He travelled all over
the world having gay unprotected sex with other men during layovers in
cities like Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, Rio, etc.  He caught AIDS in
the early 80's and infected almost all the male employees at Eastern.
A few of these men were bisexual and gave it to the women at the
company they were having sex with.  In the end, nearly all the
employees at Eastern had it and the Department of Health had to step
in and shut down the company.  Lorenzo became known as Patient Zero
and died shortly after.
