Having sampled both in the last six months, I'd have to say I had the
better experiences on Continental. My only complaint is that their
steerage seats have rather less padding on them than others', but you
can always sit on a blanket or pillow if it's too uncomfortable.
I am a person with short legs and I find American's Much-Less-Room-
Throughout-Coach positively claustrophbic in the 757s. My sympathies to
the long-limbed.

It depends upon your "long haul" destination. Another factor to
consider is which airline has a major hub at the airport nearest to
you? Sometimes you can get a better deal based on a combination of air
routes, presence of a hub at your nearby airport, and date/time of
departure return.
If all that makes you crazy trying to figure it out, just visit your
local travel agent. Let them figure it out for you. As commission is
not involved in air tickets - you'll get an honest deal. (Note: some
agents charge a fee for booking air since they don't get commission. If
the agency has healthy commission business you may not be charged a fee.)

Continental, now that American has refitted its planes to remove "more
room in coach."

The best airline is the one that has a flight schedule that best fits
your itinerary for the lowest cost. You did not indicate what your
specific flight plans are or what you mean by "best," so in the absence
of any criteria, my explanation is the most sensible.
