Vacation Suggestion

I am looking for some help finding a vacation place. My constraints /
requirements are:

 * 2 kids (3+ and 6+)
 * Mountain (but not show / skiing)
 * Not very touristy
 * Weather Moderate (we're looking at mid to late Oct) - Daytime temp
of 65+ would definitely be desirable

I have thought of somewhere in Oregon or Sedona AZ but haven't really
narrowed down. Would love to hear some more suggestions.

TIA.

Sedona's pretty touristy, but nearby Jerome might be nice.  In the east,
the Great Smoky Mountain area might be nice.  I believe the temps will be
there.  Great Smokey is a really popular park, but not really too touristy.

If you head toward the Pisgah National Forest/Sapphire Valley/Asheville
area, you'll find it not very touristy.  Go to Tennesee or nearby
Cherokee NC and you'll find it pretty touristy.

Great Smoky Mountain national park itself is not very touristy, that
is, inside the park. The towns clustered around the various entrances
into the park are tourist hell. I've never seen such traffic and
confusion, nor  such a lot of tacky souvenir shops, often with fake
Indians standing outside.

I once camped in the park, and it was lovely and peaceful, but the
sites were rather primitive, i.e., no hot water and no showers
anywhere inside the park. All water had to be hauled to the tent sites
from central spigots. There were toilets at the more "developed"
camping areas, and sinks with cold water only.  I'm not sure I would
want to do it with a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old.

Also, the weather in October is rather unpredictable, at least on the
east coast. It could be lovely and warm, or it could be cold or rainy.

Since Northern AZ is on your current list, I'd agree with another who
suggested funky Jerome rather than pricey Sedona. The largest selection of
lodging choices from extreme economy to quite pricey would be Flagstaff just
up the hill from Sedona. Sedona's only a 45-minute drive from Flag and Flag
is closer to other options including the Navajo and Hopi nations, Lake
Powell and nearby Antelope Canyon(s), the Grand Canyon (not too bad
touristy-wise at this time especially if you avoid it on Friday through
Sunday). Do your kids like trains? I'd strongly suggest the Verde Canyon RR
in Clarkdale if so. In any event, there are many National Park Service sites
worth checking out in the area. If you plan to visit more than 2-3, the
annual all-parks National Park Pass ($50 for the whole family for the whole
USA) is better than paying entry fees park by park (e.g., $20 for Grand
Canyon).

Craig (in Flagstaff)

PS--in N AZ, the weather can change quickly. You could easily find your
desired temps here--or it could be a good bit colder. In any event, the most
likely weather for a stay in October is a dry one with little chance of
rain.

The whole combination of Mountains/October/65 temps sounds awfully
dicey to me.  You _might_ get it, but I don't think your odds are
real great.

There is a lovely range of mountains in the center of the island of Puerto Rico
which are not touristy with some very interesting things to see, like ancient
Taino heiroglyphs, caves, and such.  And you can also do beaches in the
same trip if you like.

Temps definitely above 65.  You may have to worry about hurricanes. . . .

What time of year are you interested in taking your vacation?

May be tough to get a room around here at this time of year due to a lot
of "leaf peepers" chasing the colors.

Oh, fabulous idea.  This should fit all the OP's criteria.

I presume you're being sarcastic?  And why do you strip out the OP's
criteria from your "reply"?
The OP's criteria, and my response to same, in red.

* 2 kids (3+ and 6+)
The following web site describes what there is for kids to do in Big Bend.
http://www.ehow.com/how_18102_enjoy-big-bend.html
Criterion fulfilled, if your kids are at all interested in nature.
(Contrary to what the web site says about danger in letting kids play in
the water because of "holes" -- one can go to Lajitas crossing, where
the water is only a few inches deep, and let the kids "dabble".)  And
where else can you fairly readily see such exotica as javelinas and
roadrunners?
[If they're into arcades, amusement parks, etc. -- this isn't for them.
If they're into video games, you can leave them in the room with the TV.]

* Mountain  (but not show / skiing)
The Chisos Mountains are the only mountain range in the U.S. that is
entirely within a National Park.  The Chisos Mountain Lodge is in the
Basin in the park.  Criterion fulfilled.

* Not very touristy
When you consider that more people visit Yosemite in one day than visit
Big Bend in an entire year......criterion fulfilled.

* Weather Moderate (we're looking at mid to late Oct) - Daytime temp of
65+ would definitely be desirable
According to Wunderground, the average daytime high at Alpine (nearest
weather station to Big Bend) for October 2004 and October 2003 was 75
degrees.  The average daily mean was 65 degree.  Criterion fulfilled.

Why in the world would you think that?  I thought your idea was
excellent, and wanted the OP to see as much.  Sorry, but you've got
some issues.

Todd,

I've gotta say that when I first read your response, I assumed is was a
sarcastic one, then realized you could be serious and consequently I had no
idea of what to make of your response. It all depends on the tone of voice
we assume you would use when saying "Oh, fabulous idea". So telling others
that "they have some issues" when we don't understand you is going a bit too
far, at least for me.

Sorry, but I just think this is sad.  There was absolutely nothing
about the response, and absolutely nothing about anything I've ever
said here, which would suggest that I was being sarcastic.  There
was no cue of that sort.  Yeah, you can say "Oh, but we *could*
read it as sarcastic."  Well, OK, but I have no idea why you would
want to do that.  Anyway, enough of this.  I guess now we understand
each other.

Because of your temperature constraints, you might consider Hawaii, either
Maui or the Big Island of Hawaii, since there are elevations over 10,000 feet
on Maui and over 13,000 feet on the Big Island. For more information, you are
invited to visit my Big Island webpage at:

pop-ups, no advertising, no cookies and nothing for sale. Bon voyage. KM

Big Bear in the San Bernadino Mountains in Southern California.
Daytime highs in the 60's and night time lows in the 40's.  Great for
the kids, lots to do, and easy on the wallet that time of year.  One
note of caution, though, a number of school systems have fall break in
mid to late October so plan ahead.

How about Jim Thorpe, PA?  I just got back from mountainbiking the trails in
Lehigh Valley.  I loved it.  I'm hoping to go back in Oct, when it's fall
foliage season even though it might be very crowded then.

There's defnitely plenty to do with a family (i.e., biking, rafting,
camping, train ride) although your younger one might not enjoy it as much as
everyone else.

Great idea.  Temps will be lower than this person requests, though.
