Hi All,

Myself and a friend are in the early stages of planning a road trip
across the US for the summer of 2005.  Our first priority is getting
set up with a car rental company.

I am finding it difficult establishing the exact age restrictions that
the many car rental companies have. By August 2006, I will be 24 years
of age.

What options do I have?  What would be the best rental company for me?

Thanks in advance.

Apologies, this is supposed to read summer 2006 :)

If you are travelling from Europe do remember that US rental
cars only come with minimal insurance and while they
sell extra insurance at the desk you pay dearly for it.
If you book from Europe either through a travel agent or
a specialist like Holiday Autos their rates typically
include all insurances.

The other thing to watch out for is one way rental charges.
Picking up a car and dropping it at different locations
can incur charges that run anything from $500 to $2000 !

National usually do better one way deals but shop around.

At 24 you'll pay a little extra but should be OK.

You mean summer 2006.  I don't know which country you are from.  But
your best bet is probably making the arrangement with a travel agent.
Usually you should be able to rent from most companies if you are 21,
but you'd be paying more if you are younger than 25.

Thank you for the rapid response.

I had a suspicion that there would be extra charges for drivers younger
than 25.  I'll contact my travel agent.  Good advice!

Cheers

I do not agree with the travel agent suggestion.  IME, TA's have
no incentive to find you a good deal.  The car rental companies are,
however, fairly competitive.  I'd check the major travel websites
to get a list of lower-priced rental agencies where you'll arrive, like
www.orbitz.com, www.expedia.com, www.travelocity.com -- and
then check the websites of the rental companies themselves, like...
Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Thrifty,
Using their website for your locale, I think you'll be able to book
an international reservation directly, as I did from the U.S. for a
Thrifty car rental in Italy.

Be aware that in the U.S., collision damage waiver (CDW) is an
add-on option that may or may not be needed depending upon
whether you'd be covered otherwise by your own insurance or
thru a credit-card benefit.

If you are UKbased I would suggest Trailfinders for good car hire
rates

Fees for under 25 can be steep.  I think virgin (www.virginholidays.com)
offer a platinum insurance plan with their flydrives - unlike many all
inclusive offers, this one include the under 25 fee.

Virgin use mainly Dollar rental locations.  I have found the bext pricing to
be through www.airlinenetwork.co.uk

When I rented as an <25, they (Alamo) were charging per driver. I think it
was $20/day extra...

Hope this helps.
