Hi there.

I'm a Canadian. I bought a camera in California during my visit not
long ago. The retailer charged me the California state sales tax. When
I came back to Canada, the Canadian Custom charged me duty and taxes.
My question is if it is possible to get refund of the state-tax that I
paid?

Thanks
Dom

Sorry, Dom, but we don't have sales-tax refunds for visitors.

Not only that, but the Canadian taxes are based on the cost of the
camera including taxes. You pay tax on the tax.

I never knew that.  Could you explain what taxes are included in the
camera before the Canadian taxes are added?  Thanks.

You pay duty based on the gross price paid - and that includes the state tax
that was paid to purchase the camera in California.

It's all right there on the bill for them to see.

I believe that some state tax refunds are possible.  For instance,
the state of North Dakota website states that Canadian citizens
can apply for refunds of state tax on goods taken from North Dakota
to Canada.

No. If you have any other questions about laws in California, you can
probably find the answers to them at http://www.state.ca.us

 It does seem unfair...
I recall a few years ago I spent 2 weeks in Canada, as far NE as the
tip
of Newfoundland.  I saved my receipts and got back about ... $50 or so
of the GST.
The woman said that I had my paperwork better organized than any she
had seen -- apparently most walk in with wads of receipts in their
pockets....
