Newark EWR: still severe delays?

OK, so I don't fly very often...

I'm looking into flying to eastern Canada.  For the Nashville<=>St.
John's trip, it's looking like my choices are Continental or Air Canada.

Continental is more than $100 less expensive round-trip.  On the other
hand, if I fly Continental I have to connect in Newark.

Last time I flew, I connected in Newark, both directions.  It was the
worst air travel experience I've ever had.  (I could *literally* have
*driven* from Manchester, N.H. to Nashville faster than Continental was
able to fly me.  And I don't believe in speeding.)  Severe ground and
air traffic delays in Newark.

Have conditions in Newark improved since this "flight from hell" in 2000?

Air Canada connects in Toronto - surely delays in Toronto aren't worse
than they are in Newark?

If it was severe air and ground delays, then whatever airline you were on
would be delayed.  And the delays propagate outward from major airports like
Newark.  I have had delays in several airports, but Newark is not one.  But
the one thing about Newark Airport i noticed.  I think all the people you
only see at a carny midway live in that airport.

Which was, again, Continental - the same airline that is essentially the
competition for Air Canada on this route.  The delays certainly did
propagate outward from Newark: I knew I was in trouble before leaving
Nashville when it was time for the flight to leave & there was no
airplane at the gate!

I didn't see any unusual people in the Newark terminal but that was
probably because they were hidden among all the stranded worn-out travelers!

(I will say it struck me as a poorly-laid-out and poorly-marked airport;
usually if you pay attention it's not difficult to find your gate but in
Newark that didn't seem to be the case.  Luckily I had plenty of time to
find my equally-delayed connecting flights!)

It does sound from the other reply as if this was a short-term thing and
that it's safe to schedule flights through this airport.  I'd just never
encountered traffic-based delays serious enough to cause missed
connections before - and since the weather was good (over the entire
route) at the time I wondered if there were systemic problems there.

I often fly into and out of Newark and have never experienced delays
of this sort, except for once due to severe freezing rain. Maybe it
was just your bad luck, or is it just my good luck?

If there are any weather conditions that can cause delays, La Guardia is
the worst and Newark is second worst.

If I had a connection in Newark, I would be very nervous if the weather
isn't perfect.

Or you could say, "JFK is the best and Newark is the second best."

Actually, I meant as far as any airport I've ever known of, not just the
three in the NYC area.

Or, for fun, La Guardia is in third place while JFK is third from worst.

If things are the same as they were before we stopped flying in January
2001, O'Hare can be a disaster too.

It depends on what you mean by delays.  We were on the Newark-St.John's
flight last August.  The plane left the gate on time.  It left the ground an
hour later.  However, it appears that was factored into their scheduling as
we arrived in St.John's on time.  Unfortunately, our baggage didn't.  It
arrived 6 days later.
Enjoy yourself in St.John's.  Well, maybe I need not say that.  I don't
know how anyone could go to St.John's and not enjoy themselves.
Before making your trip, you may wish to view the photos from our 2005

Yeah, they did that on the Newark=>Manchester leg on my flight too.
Apparently the air conditioning on an airplane works more or less the
same way as the air conditioning in a car -- which means if you sit on
the taxiway & idle for an hour in July, it gets pretty warm!
