You might check the "driveaway" companies, where you deliver someone's
car for them to the desired location. Don't know if the available
flexibility will fit your wants, but it might...

Route 66 Does not end in San Diego, but Santa Monica. DH and I took a
month to do this trip two years ago. It was the best trip we have yet
to take.

I used to live in West Hollywood and I seem to remember seeing a "START
ROUTE 66" on Santa Monica Blvd. in the area.

I believe that sign's at the Pacific Coast Highway (1). And it's
sociologically incorrect: That's where the highway ends (well, across
the street) as most of the traffic came this way, not the other.

$500 is what I had to pay. you may get an offer for less
but the odds are the difference will be covered in the
daily rate, get prices from a number of agencies and
make sure they include everything then take the best deal.

Try a car rental company, a specialty car manufacturer (sometimes they
have to switch cars around) or a shipping company. Or try an
entertainment company in your area to see if an executive needs
something hand delivered (but thay may not work on a car trip and you
may need to be bonded). or post something to find a person going in the
opposite direction who will swap with you.

Sometimes you can avoid the drop-off fee by going the opposite direction--
i.e., starting in SD and ending in Chicago.
Alternatively, you could find someone who wants to go the other way, rent it
for double the amount of time and share the cost.
