Hi,
We loved our one & only visit to Maui south of Kihei about 15 years
ago and can't wait to go back.
We stayed at a Makena Surf condo and loved snorkelling right out our
back door on a very quiet beach! Unfortunately, it now appears to be
out of our price range.
Just starting our planning....We don't need crowds or activities, just
peace and quiet and snorkelling.
Does such a place still exist?
Suggestions?
Approx. Maui Arrival Date: 7/24/06
Approx. Departure Date: 8/7/06
thnx
Phil H.
PS: If this is the wrong newsgroup, please suggest a better one....

Does it have to be Maui? If you like peace and quiet, how about the north
shore of Kauai? Lots of good beaches, lush foliage. Check www.vrbo.com.
Other thoughts are Molokai and Lanai. There's another thread active named
Best/worst Hawaiian Islands with a lot of information about staying on
Molokai. Don't know about the snorkeling there, though.
I think of Maui as pretty dense in the tourist areas, Kihei, Waimea, and
Kaanapali-Lahaina. We've avoided it in later years.

We stayed in a condo at Ma'ala'ea last year and it is very quiet if you
are at the south end. There is a four mile, or so, open nature preserve
sand beach with nothing! fronting on it for miles. Here is one I would
recommend http://tinyurl.com/efb84 (I have no $$ interest in it, and no
referral fee for me either - I just liked the area.) But there are
many other condos there too. I also recommend searching on vrbo.com.

have A/C!!!
I did check vrbo.com and found some interesting possibilities.

Napili Bay
Better than Molokini, one of the best spots for snorkeling
in Hawaii

Just remembered another spot on Maui. Ahihi bay which is also, I
believe, a marine preserve. I think you need your own equipment. I had
my own and we just parked the rental car by the side of the road in a
little bay and swam out a ways to a beautiful reef.

When we were planning our first trip, I was surprised at how many
places don't have it.

Although Makena is definitely a spot that is on the must snorkel list,
I prefer to stay north of Kaanapali. There is lots of easy and not so
easy snorkeling as you drive up the road there. Our last visit was at
Polynesian shores in Kahana www.cyberrentals.com but no A/C. Depends
on when you visit if you'll need it - we didn't in Nov. Amazing over
water deck, BBQ's, turtles, and whale sightings from this spot, as well
as a slightly rough to get in, but great snorkel spot. I got to
snorkel with turtles on thanksgiving am. I own a couple of vacation
rentals, not in HI, and list on vrbo, but their interface stinks for
guests looking for places. Try: www.vacationrentals.com
www.vrconnection.com www.greatrentals.com and
www.greatfamilyrentals.com and www.vacationrentals411.com for much
better interfaces from a user's point of view.
