Because the air is thick with smoke cigarette and people spit on the floors?

There are 32,000,000 (yep, thirty-two MILLION) people in that ONE city.
Imagine - the population of Canada in ONE city!!  Amazing!

I have a close friend who went to teach English in Wuxi, and traveled to
ChongQing during her stay.  She said China is an amazing country with
incredible growth and energy; vast numbers of dirt poor people yet an
increasing rich middle class emerging.  She said she would go back as a
tourist.

Me, I'll go to the Pacific Mall in Markham.

You're off by a little.  It's 3.4 million, not 32 million.

| The population of the urban area of Chongqing proper was estimated at
| 3.4 million in 2004, ranking approximately as the 10th largest urban area
| of China.

But from the same web site:
"The municipality of Chongqing has a population of 32,355,000 (2004),
most of them living outside the urban area of Chongqing proper, "

...When you look at the population of New York City do you restrict it
to just, say, Manhattan or include all the boroughs?

How about these sources that all agree with the 30,000,000 number...

As the largest city of China, ...with a population of 30 million.

. Secondly, it is unusually large in population. At the end of 1997,

That's not a legitimate question. You should be asking whether "New
York City" includes the suburbs or not. All five boroughs are part of
the city.

Perhaps the question should be how much of New Jersey & Conn. do you
include.
