A girlfriend and I are travelling by via rail from
Ottawa-Toronto-Windsor, arriving around 4pm on a Thursday.  We need to
get from the Windsor train station to Flat Rock (approx a half hour
south of downtown detroit). Can someone tell me the fastest/cheapest
way to travel between the two?  I have never been to Detroit before, so
my knowledge of the city is limited to internet research, although I am
not particularly nervous about travelling alone in new places.
Thanks!

For your safety, take a taxi.

Can I take a cab right from the train station, across the border, and
right to Flat Rock?   And what about cost?

Can anyone else give me some advice concerning this? I dont want to tae
a cab the whole way, as I don't really want to be stuck in a cab if
there are long waits at the border crossing. What are the chances we
would be through cutoms quickly?

Your public transit options are very thin.  If you don't want to take a
cab (which would be hideously expensive), I think you are going to have
to rent a car in Windsor or Detroit and drive.

This page gives border crossing wait times, updated every 10 minutes.

I've never been delayed at Windsor.

You certainly don't need to take a cab to get from Windsor to Detroit;
there's a bus service via the tunnel.  I don't have details and don't
know if the bus comes near the Windsor train station or not.

I have no idea about getting from Detroit to Flat Rock, but if you take
a cab for that, at least you won't being going through customs in it.

And you should be aware that both Windsor and Detroit taxis
levy a hefty surcharge for cross-border trips.

No, it doesn't.  The tunnel bus just shuttles between the
downtown areas of the two cities.  The Windsor railway
station is in a district called Walkerville, a few
kilometres east of downtown.  The city bus route between
the railway station and the tunnel bus is called Crosstown 2.
Here's the map:

The railway station is near Walker Road and Wyandotte St.
The tunnel bus stop is near Ouelette Ave and Wyandotte.

Both buses are run by Transit Windsor, but a separate fare
is required for each; there are no free transfers.

I used these buses in the opposite direction, from Detroit
to the Winsdor railway station, last July and they worked fine.

Nor do I.

In my experience, delays at customs are rare, but I would use
the tunnel bus to avoid the cross-border taxi surcharge.
You could use separate taxis on either side of the border,
if you want.

Thanks for all the info. If the weather's okay, we'll probably take the
bus from the train station to the tunnel, the tunnel bus, and then a
cab. If it's not nice out, then a cab,the tunnel bus, and a cab. I'm
sure we'll figure it out somehow, hehe.
