Three of us fifty-something girlfriends want to take about a 3 day trip and
are looking for suggestions for a special little get-away. We have
considered spas in Texas, Arizona, Santa Fe, wineries in Santa Barbara,
shopping in Dallas. All sound good but we thought someone might have the
perfect idea that we hadn't thought of. We just want good food, shopping,
and pampering, etc. Would love to get suggestions from readers. TIA

Where in the world are you and your friends located? If you're all on
the United States west coast, then the ideas you're already considering
are good ideas. Las Vegas might interest you too.

We're located in Texas, but it doesn't have to be a trip near us. Vegas is
a good idea. Thanks.

If you're looking to take only a three day trip, it makes sense to
consider locations that are within a few hours plane ride. Spending half
a day or more traveling each way (plus associated costs) for only three
days makes no sense for a brief vacation.

There are spas and wineries in California's Napa Valley and, for shopping,
it's not far to San Francisco. (If you go there, just remember to dress
warmly.)

If you want pampering, how about a Holland America cruise? I believe
that they have 7-day and 4-day cruises leaving out of a port in Texas.
My sister and I both in our fifties have taken several HAL cruises and
love them. Unlike at some resort hotels, the activity people aren't
pushy at all. If, while at sea, all you want to do is lounge by the
pool and use the hot tubs - they leave you to enjoy these pleasures.
If you do a Western Caribbean, Cozumel is great for shopping -
especially high quality Taxco Mexican silver. Grand Cayman is great for
tanzanite. Check it out.

Don't know how you feel about heat, but some of those locations,
especially Texas, can get pretty hot in the summer. Someone mentioned
Vegas, which is a great vacation city for adults but can get
*extremely* hot in the summer. California coastal areas -- San
Francisco, Napa Valley, etc. -- are more moderate.
You might want to consider the Carmel Valley Ranch, an upscale resort
located south of San Francisco and near the town of a
Carmel-By-The-Sea. I stayed there once and it was lovely, with a nice
golf course, tennis, a spa, good food, etc. It's close to Monterey, Big
Sur, etc., and close enough to San Francisco for day trips into the
city.

In a similar vein, there's the Claremont Resort:

Spa-going friends of mine are enthusiastic about it.

I'd find that a little far for a daytrip to San Francisco.
