Hi,

I want to stay in Philly for a few nights and explore the local area. I
can only find one hostel on the net and have been told it isn't very
central (but really nice). Its called

HI - Chamounix Mansion  and its at
West Fairmount Park, 3250 Chamounix Drive.

Anyone know how far out of 'central' this is? OR;

Can anyone recommend budget accomodation that is either central to the
sights OR on a regularily service public transport route that can get
me easily to the sights?

Many Thanks

Pete

What's hour budget? There is a Comfort Inn on Penn's Landing and two
Holiday Inns in convenience areas that might fit your price range. Also,
if you don't mind staying a few miles out of town, there's a Days Inn on
Route 38 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey that might also be in your price
range and that's only a few minutes from either of two rail lines into
Philly or a brief drive from there.

The Chamounix Mansion is a youth hostel, based on their web site. This
place should be okay, but it is not in Philadelphia, so you would either
need to drive or use public transportation to get to the tourist areas.

The Days Inn in NJ would be as convenient as the Chamounix Mansion as
far as logistics are concerned.

Being as though I live in the Philly area and I work in Philly, I have
no experience actually staying in hotels here so I cannot comment on
quality.

Yes, it is in Philadelphia. It's in Fairmount Park, and not
particularly convenient to the center, but it's in Philadelphia. It's
a mile from the nearest bus stop. I'm not sure I would want to take
that mile-long walk at night.

I've heard that the hostel is very nice, but I have a feeling it's
mostly used by groups who have their own shuttles into the city, or
who have activities in the park.

Fairmount Park is a very nice and very large park (much larger than
Central Park in New York.) Parts of it seem to be far away from any
city.

There is at least one other hostel in Philadelphia, the Bank Street
hostel, right in the historic center. I don't know anything specific
about it, but here is their web page:
