Our family is going to Ontonagon Michigan in July for a week.  We will
have 3 children age 12-14 with us.  We plan on hiking in the Porcupine
Mountain area and swimming.  I've looked over the stuff we received in
the mail from the tourism offices and there's an overwhelming number of
things to do or see in that area of the U.P. but I was wondering if any
of you could help with a few questions I had:
-
1.  Is Lake Superior too cold to swim in (in mid July)?
-
2.  Are there any "must see" places that you would recommend in that
area of the U.P.
-
3.  Is a "day trip" up to Copper Harbor worth taking?  We were
considering visiting the State Park up there.
-

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Edpends on what you consider "too cold"> As far as I'm concerned
it's damn cold.

nly Lake of the Clouds in Porcupine Park.

If you go to Copper Harbor take the skyline drive or whatever
it's called. The view of Copper Harbor from the drive is worth
the drive all by itself.

What restaurants are good in the Ontonagon and Porcupine Mountain area?

Not having ben there in forty-odd years, I really wouldn't know.
My recolelction is that there were no restaurants of consequence,
only cafes and the like.

The water temp today was in the low 60's
(http://www.landbigfish.com/watertemps/superior2.cfm?ID=7).  I wouldn't
expect it to get much warmer - maybe 65.  I couldn't find any
historical water temps online.  If it's a warm sunny day, I'd jump in!

You are on the right track hiking in the Porkies.  It's a nice park
with lots of hiking trails.  Beware, many of the trails are kind of
long.

There are several interesting waterfalls in the area; we enjoyed the
ones in Presque Isle.

Sorry, never been there.

Regarding restaurants, nothing special that I recall.  We stuck with
cooking in our cabin or McD's.

Have fun!
