Hi,
In a few weeks I am driving with my parents from the east coast to
Lousiana, and am looking for an nice place to spend the night. My
estimate is somewhere along I-20 between Atlanta and Birmingham or maybe
along I-85 between Atlanta and Montgomery.
Any suggestions?
And what's a better way to go, I-20 to I--59 or I-85 to I-65 and I-10?
thanks,
- Koen.

For lodging I recommend Birmingham for the range of choices. Stop at
the Alabama welcome center and get copies of the discount coupon books.
If you need 2 rooms get 2 of each book. You can also see if they have
any discounts at nice places. Don't try the bottom prices but you
should do well from $50 to $75 per room. Montgomery has a few nice
places but Birmingham has better choices. There are also a couple of
B&Bs on both routes that have tempted me but I've never gotten around to
trying one there.
All of the paths from Atlanta to Baton Rouge are about the same. If you
have some time you might look into trying a part of the parkway along
the Nachez Trail. It's slow but interesting. Drops you around St.
Francisville as I remember. Nice B&Bs there certainly or at Nachez.

I agree about using coupon books for deals but disagree about the price
range. Motels along the bypass are very inexpensive. We stayed at a "suite"
motel (bedroom not completely separate but it had kitchenette) for $29.
Clean, nice.

Thanks. Any suggestions for an "old-fashioned mom and pop type
southern restaurant" in that area?

No time for that this year :(

Try the Irondale Cafe in Irondale. The home of the fried green tomato. FFM

Are you looking for really nice, like a resort? Callaway Gardens is off
I-85, south of Atlanta on the way to Columbus. Beautiful gardens, trails,
golf, bike riding, etc. If you're interested, I'd call ahead, since it is
fall and the leaves are in season.
Columbus, Georgia, a fairly large town (third or fourth in Georgia) is
supposed to have a nice downtown area, on the river. I'm sure there are some
hotels down there as well.
Otherwise, you'll find hundreds of the usual hotels at most interstate
exits.
