When I look at some Cathay and Malaysia flights on a travels website,
they very long stopovers at Hong Kong or KUL airports. For example, 26
hours in total from Australia to Japan.

I find that you can always find a an air deal to China that's reasonable but
the the hotels are a rip-off.
Using any hotel booking site from CITS to travelocity and Marriott
especially for 4 & 5 star  , you may as much as you would pay in the west.
