Several months ago we booked and paid for some flights for a family holiday in Malta in October, via AirMiles (paid for part using Airmiles, part in cash). We booked villa accomodation, and paid a substantial deposit, at the same time.

I know that non-US airlines cannot fly between US cities. I assume that the only exception is when there's a stopover. For example, an Iberia flight from SFO to MAD can go via ORD. Is this correct, or will the SFO-ORD part have to be handled by an Iberia partner such as AA?
