Traveling with other people of various nationalities, what is usually acceptable in regards to going through passport control? For example, I have an EU passport, and my wife an American one. We go through together the citizens lane at America and EU.

I've read that baggage handles pilfer the contents of bags (obviously a generalization but...). How concerned should I be about that? That is, what shouldn't I put in my checked baggage? Or, what is most likely to disappear?

For most of the 20th Century the conventional wisdom for people who drove convertible automobiles (cars with soft tops) was to never lock the vehicle. Thieves would simply cut the top to get what they wanted. Then you still lost the item(s) and you had to repair the top.
