...can bring cars to a halt, has there been any case of poor fuel getting
into a commercial airliner? What checks are there to ensure that all engines
aren't going to barf over something up with the fuel at a rather
inconvenient moment?

flying LHR - YVR in a couple of days, and 2 choices at the low end of
the price scale.  AC or UTD, both are indirect, so no choice there.
In terms of comfort and convenience, which wins out??
