Someone at work told me that Thailand has introduced a fee for visas when
you arrive in the country.  Is this for real?  We're travelling on
Australian passports - in case that makes a difference.

Hi! i just got back from Thailand, bought some excellent factory reject
clothes in Koh Samui from a shop called "XL for Men". They apparently
have more shops located in Bangkok, their was brands like Addidas,
