Thanks to all the previous reponses, we have now changed out itinerary
to drive from Sydney to Port Douglas and fly back to Sydney.
Still looking for any suggestions on:
1.  Where to stay that is relatively cheap along the way -- as long as

While planning my 5-6 weeks trip through NZ, I can't decide whether I
want to travel from North to South or vice versa. Below is a list of
the pros and cons, maybe someone can add some points and help me out:

A friend told me she'd taken a walking tour of Sydney which had some
connection to the Sydney Police Department.  I can't seem to find any
information on that.  Does anyone know anything about that?  Or of a
particular walking tour that would be terrifically interesting to a

i'am coming back to to uk after a year travel. I will have 2 bags to check
in, one carry on bag and a didgeridoo, will this be ok? what should i check
the didg in as?? also what is the max wight for the bags?

At the beginning of September, I'm going to Australia to visit some friends
in Sydney and, a few weeks later, will fly to Melbourne to spend 4 days
exploring on my own.
I was thinking of getting separate guide books for Sydney and Melbourne

Do they have multi-card ATMs in NZ, similar to Australia ? In past visits to NZ,
I have maintained an ANZ bank account (ex-NZ Post Office Bank) to which I have
telegraphed funds. I realise there are other options.

We are planning a month in Nz next March or April. Is it better to hire a
car and explore both islands, or fly between them and take a tour in each
,and is four weeks long enough to see the main sights ?
We also plan to take a week in Fiji, is this a good time weatherwise ?

Is it relatively quick and simple to get to Featherdale Wildlife Park
via Sydney's public transport? Similarly, is Healesville Wildlife
Sanctuary easily accessible via public transport in Melbourne? I think
